The best laid plans...

Today is our 11 year anniversary.  It is also the day that Tommy was supposed to leave for the classical guitar convention in Georgia.

He didn't leave.

The new guitar design didn't come together the way he had hoped and last night, seven hours before his flight was to depart, he realized it just wasn't going to be finished in time.

It wasn't what we had hoped for, so I'm sure there were moments of disappointment for both of us.

But he's still here, which I love.  And we didn't have to load four kids into the car at 4:15 a.m. to drive him to the airport, which I love.  And the guitar is still here and the ideas are still there and the sun rose in the east and it will set in the west and time will march on and things will just happen in a different way than we had planned.

And today is our anniversary!  To celebrate, we will go to Target and get diapers.  Perhaps I will even take a shower.  It will be a good day.
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. -Matthew 6:34

  3. Target AND diapers?!? One lucky woman :) Happy Anniversary to ya'll! I am sorry other things didn't work out, but I am glad ya'll get to spend the day together :) All the best, and sneak in a glass of champagne, or at least sparkling grape juice, if you can!

  4. Happy Anniversary to you both. Y'all are much classier than we are ~ a date at Target. Our 11th anniversary was spent in the magazine section at Wegman's. :-)

  5. Happy Anniversary, Dweej! So sorry that the new guitar design didn't come together in time. I have faith that things will still work out just how they're meant to. You have such a beautiful, giving family...nothing but good things should be coming your way.

  7. Happy anniversary! It's too bad he didn't get to go, but yay that he's home!

(I always feel ridiculously sorry for myself if Joey has a basketball game to coach on our anniversary. Oh the sad brown eyes!)

  10. I feel for your disappointment, but agree with Lost in Idaho, I do love that you remain so possitive.
And on the topic of anniversaries that don't really go as one would hope, I just thought I'd share: One time my husband and I almost stayed in a geriatric facility connected with a hospital for an anniversary. (We checked in and everything. We initially were not swayed by that stale smell of sullied adult diapers or the woman with the walker in the lobby who threw-up in the trash can.) And it was either that, or staying in my parents bedroom. And we had the kids with us.

    It was very romantic.

So, Target might not be too shabby.

  12. Daenel, that is hilarious! That you remember that means it was a smashing success ;)

    Coren, great minds think alike!

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

Oh, and Jen....I took that picture on Tuesday at the lake down the road from our house. Those are my kids' little heads in the water. I just thought the colors looked magical out there that day :)

  14. I understand this type of disappointment oh too well. My birthday and anniversary came and went without much fanfare. We usually go out or get away but, the hubbie had surgery on his hip a week before our anniversary (this was in Feb. ) and we are STILL talking about how we need to get away for our anniversary...so I feel your pain.

have a good trip to Target...;)

  16. Our Christian church met in a temple for a summer while our spot was under construction. I opened the Torah one Sunday, and inside it read, "Man plans, and God laughs."

I can only know that God has a different plans for your man.

Now, can we talk about cloth diapers...?

  22. Sounds like a balance of great things and not so great things. Sorry to hear about the guitar design not coming together, but a very happy anniversary to the two of you!

  23. Dweej, happy anniversary to you! I hope you two will have many more fun years together. You know the saying...when a door closes, God opens a window. Something good is on the horizon, I just know it!

  24. Happy 11th anniversary to you and Tommy. I was going to refer to that hell in hallway thing again, but stopped myself. Again...because I remember wanting to punch that person who kept saying it in the face.
Keep thinking those positive thoughts and don't give up hope that good things will come. They will. I just know...but the waiting is the hardest part. Yes, I just unintentionally quoted Tom Petty.
Enjoy your day of love. The box is in the mail tomorrow.

  25. Happy Anniversary! And hey, if the scented candle aisle at Target isn't romantic, I don't know what is ;-)

  27. Happy Anniversary. The great thing about the two of you is that you take lemons and make lemon aide. Most couples would be stressed and pissy with each other. You guys are going to take advantage of the extra time and enjoy family time!

  28. Target just happens to be one of my happy places, so I'd be cool with that. Happy anniversary! And sorry for your temporary disappointment.

  29. Happy 11th anniversary to you and Tommy. How nice that you could spend it together instead of you in Michigan, him in Georgia. The guitar thing will work out, all in God's good time. Of course, you know that.

  31. Why am I always a day late for you?

    Happy belated Anniversary!

I love the verse....so true, so necessary.

  32. Oh, Dwija, you are one of the most inspiring people I "know." You always look on the bright side and take things in stride. I so admire that about you.

I hope you had a wonderful anniversary despite it all and that you got to take TWO showers with hot water and without an audience inquiring as to what different parts of your anatomy are.

  33. Happy Anniversary! A good day to get married ;)
Wow... I have some good reading ahead of me. Just what I like! I love the name of your blog too... Isn't Melanie lovely.

  34. ...And this comment (from my phone) didn't stick either. I told you Happiest Anniversary to you both, and all things happen for a reason. Detours are God's Road Map.

By the way, I have a favorite uncle who teaches classical guitar at UC San Diego. I'd like to hook you guys up with him somehow (online obviously, unless you guys are planning a trip back there sometime soon) once Tommy's done with his prototype.

You never know, could be one of those little coincidence-looking things that end up leading to awesomeness! Email me if you'd like his info.
