A mother's Pentecost sonnet

Upon first glance they seem to be the same;
All round and smooth and bright and mostly light.
You stop. And stare. And see the hidden flame.
Most green. Hers: red.  Some peace and now some fight.
So still and perfect now she seems to be,
With grace, a smile, a heart so full and kind.
Just wait for her. Just watch and you will see
A fire that burns like none you'll ever find.
That strength, that drive, through happiness and strife
That rush, that Spirit, is alive and well
The Lord rejoices in her meager life
And every joy around her seems to swell
       His love so pure doth cloak her like a shroud;
       Her head so high and yet her heart so bowed.

This piece was written in response to this week's prompt at The Lightning and the Lightning Bug:

  1. Two of the reasons I wanted to blog were to write and to write about God. I find, after a few years of blogging, I don't do much real writing, and I don't write nearly enough about God.

    Why? Because there are so many better writers out there.

    Like you.

    I am daunted. While my "talent" seems real in my little world, in the blogosphere it is overwhelmed by lyrical words that are artfully arranged to hit the right notes.

    Like yours.

    So instead of a blog "writer," I can only claim to be a blog reader.

    I'm thankful for yours!

    Beautiful.

  2. What Ellen said was lovely, but hey, Ellen! Don't see yourself short!

    Okay, now back to Dweej. Is it normal to sigh that many times while reading a sonnet? Happy, peaceful and content sighs of satisfaction and understanding? You always take these prompts in the most fantastic directions. Love. Happy Sunday.

  3. Love the imagery of the "hidden flame," how most are green but your's is red. Just a fascinating image and beautifully written line.

    The entire poem is gorgeous, not a word out of place...the feeling behind it apparent and real. Wonderful job, Dweej!

  5. You know what I like best about this? The pace. It's so different from Normal Dweej. Usually I read your posts fast and furious, just trying to keep up! But this sonnet has a nice and slow rhythm, each word is important and meaningful.

    Love this especially:
    That strength, that drive, through happiness and strife
    That rush, that Spirit, is alive and well
    The Lord rejoices in her meager life
    And every joy around her seems to swell

  9. Gorgeous, gorgeous prose. The Lord rejoices in her meager life!! And her humility towards Him in that last line. This piece deserves a place on His mantle, Dwija. Every line of it is perfection. I am sure He is smiling down on you, so proud of who you are and what you share. You are a beautiful daughter of God. Tears!
