Semi Silent Saturday- what the heck is this?

The seed packet clearly said "cucumbers".  It even had a picture of a standard, green cucumber on it.

So what in the name of all that is holy is this fine specimen growing in our garden?  What happened????

  1. OK, this looks like ours, except ours are green and kind of have a curly end. Why am I so afraid to eat them??? lol

  2. Maybe we have the same thing but our soil is bad and yours is good...

I am absolutely afraid to eat them, girl!

  3. Do you have your cucumbers planted near your squash? If so they will cross breed and you can't eat them.

  6. Someone assured us that they are delicious, so when it stops raining, I think I'll hop back out there and pick what we have so far :)

  7. Could it be a lemon cucumber? http://www.underwoodgardens.com/True-Lemon-Cucumber-Cucumis-sativus/productinfo/V1045/ We almost bought one back when we started planting our garden...it kind of looks different from what you're growing, but maybe?

  8. It's a cuke. Ours do that when they 1) get over-ripe, 2) get too much water. I think it's kinda like a cucumber revolt. They don't like something, so they swell up and turn yellow. They'll taste NASTY. Don't eat it. :P You'll likely get more perfectly normal looking cukes of the same vine, so don't dig it up or anything.

  9. Put on thick gloves, grab it and toss it. It's a mutant.

  11. I just found your blog via FTLOB and I'm already cracking up. That's the scariest veggie I've ever seen. Run away!

  12. OMG it's a mutant! If you eat it you MIGHT get superpowers. But I can't take responsibility for any side effects!

  13. HAHAHA!!! Now you need a garden marker that says UNKNOWN variety! I'd try it, I'm down! I'm thinking the soil acidic levels were off, it didn't like something, or...it cross bred. Either way, maybe it'll taste lovely. Super powers would be an added bonus! ROFL

  14. If there is even a CHANCE of super powers, I am totally in.

Stay tuned for the eating of the mutant/potentially disgusting/potentially delicious "cucumbers"!

  15. It's a world gone mad! Cucumbers and squash cross-breeding? Is it the end of days?

  16. WAIT! Did you eat this? What in the world did it look like on the inside?

  17. Never fear, my friend. There will be careful documentation of the opening and consumption of this fine specimen!

  18. OMG Dweej I just realized I am SO far behind. Did you really post this almost 3 weeks ago? I'm catching up on my House Unseen reading (I know, Heaven forbid I let it get this far,) and I'm like, hey, bonus! All these cliffhangers (i.e., how many eggs the chickens are now laying, what the beep was that weird lookin' veggie, etc.) will most likely come to fruition within one big, happy, blog catch-up day! Woot, woot!
