"You can't do this" and other lies

Sometimes I need a swift whack upside the head.

And by "sometimes" I mean "usually".  Especially lately, what with my pregnancy complaints and wishing for things that are simply not possible in our life right now or whining about things that truly don't matter.  Heck, even whining about things that do matter is pretty freaking annoying.

So there I was, peacefully spending too much time online, justifying it by telling myself something about the older kids being out helping their dad anyway and can't a woman just take a break every now and then, when I got a comment reply notification from Dianna at The Kennedy Adventures. Wanna eavesdrop?  Sure ya do!

Edith Stein- Writer, Convert, Martyr

When we're trying to agree on a name for a new baby, the conversation usually goes something like this:

Me: What about X?
Tommy: X?  Why X?  Who in either of our families is named X?
Me: Well, no one I guess.  But there's a saint X!
Tommy: There's a saint everything, woman.  That doesn't mean we're gonna name our kid, I don't know, Eustadiola.

How to Paint Dark Window and Door Trim

So on Thursday, I posted the reveal photos of my girls' rooms and got this question from a fellow UD alum:

Ok I am beyond impressed and must beg your advice for how you did the windows. The windows in our house look alot like those - same ugly dark brown wood trim, etc. I desperately want to paint them but am not at all confident on how to do it. Are the windows in the originals the same as in the redo? In other words, did you paint the interior trim as well or did you go buy new windows with white interiors? Second, when painting the outside trim (the framework part) did you remove the wood first and then sand and paint or did you just leave it on the wall and do it. Ours is such cheap, crappy wood that I honestly don't think it could be removed and then put back up, I think it would crack or something so if I do this, I have to paint while it's nailed to the wall - is this possible or not?? Finally, our bedroom doors are all the same ugly dark wood so while I think I'm gonna just buy new doors, the door frames would have to be painted - any experience with this??

I started responding in the combox and then I was all "Holy cow.  This is as long as a blog post!"

So I made it into one (clever, right?).  Here goes...

7 Quick Takes Friday: 40 Bags and a Head Tourniquet

(1)

The fact that I'm so excited about doing 40 Bags in 40 Days this year would probably lead some less savvy readers to assume that I'm totally in LUV with cleaning.  And organizing. And having only the bare minimum in my house so that at any given moment if Jesus walks in and says "Follow me!" I won't say "But what about all this awesome stuff?  Can we put it into vacuum packs or something so I can try carrying it on my back?".  That sure would be pious wouldn't it?  No, I hate cleaning.  And that's why I love this challenge.  'Cause less stuff means less stuff to clean!  Boom.  See how I did that?

Zero Dollar Girls' Bedroom Redos: REVEAL!

It's that time again, amigos.  Can I call you "amigos"?  Just tryin' to switch it up a bit.  "Friends" is so three posts ago.  So yes then?  By the way, speaking of amigos, The Three Amigos has got to be one of the greatest cinematic achievements of  all time.  I will accept no arguments to the contrary.

Anyway.

It's time for some zero dollar room reveals!

Celebrating Lent with a "Yes"

"I'm going to give up cleaning my room!"
"Yeah, and I'll give up doing math."

I had just brought up the topic of Lenten sacrifices and these are the responses I got from our they-crack-themselves-up children.  I would have told them I was going to give up doing laundry, but they might have liked that a little too much, what with the prospect of not having to fold or put anything away for the next 40 days and all.  No, we had to...

Why I Love Homeschooling- sleeping past 9:30

Yesterday an unschooling friend of mine from college posted this picture on facebook:

The first thing I thought, and said, was "9:30 would be an early day for my Lizzy.  Honest."

It's true, too.  The child is almost 10 years old and needs a minimum of 10 hours a sleep per night.  Preferably 12.  And I don't have a problem with that.
