10 Things I Discoverd During my Social Media Sabbatical

1. Getting in shape is more than an idea and just having enough time doesn't mean I'm going to do it.

2. I'm actually a pretty good housekeeper when I bother to keep house.

3. I'm also a pretty nice person when I get enough sleep.  Hanging out with my e-friends at night might be fun for me, but it isn't so fun for my kids the next day.

4. I can never give up social media for Lent because it really wasn't that much of a sacrifice after all.

5. My brain has been trained to auto-convert everyday funny moments into status updates and tweets.

6. That's pretty pathetic, isn't it?

7. One thing I didn't even anticipate being difficult was deleting the blog posts that get delivered to my email inbox without reading them.  And I don't know why I couldn't just read them.   Something about how that wouldn't be fair to the blogs that I read from other locations?  I don't know, y'all.  I just have issues.

8. I talk to my husband more when I haven't already told the world everything already.  For years I've been hounding him to check facebook and read my blog so he could know everything everyone else knows.  And now I realize I can, you know, just actually tell him things out loud.  Weird, right?

9. The less time I spend online, the more crazy or interesting or funny stuff happens that's worthy of sharing online.  The catch 22 of interwebz land.  And I didn't even keep a log!  Mea culpa!

10. Not being able to tell people about the awesome discount on _____ product at _____ store that they should really take advantage of and here's a coupon code for ____ percent off was really the saddest part.  I mean $85 tall boots for just $38?  Plus 6% cash back through Ebates?  When it's still fall enough for you to wear them?  And they're not at all ugly but rather quite cute and cuterific?   THE WORLD DESERVES TO KNOW ABOUT THIS SORT OF THING!!!

Unrelated photo of 2 year old wearing a Blue's Clues costume on a hike. Reasonable as usual.

  1. Welcome back! I missed you so!

However, I must give a resounding, "YUP!" To every single thing on your list. I just finished reading The Boy Kings and am considering getting off FB forever. Gotta figure out how to stay in touch without CrackBook, though.

    1. Ugh! I just checked ebates and the code is already expired. See? That's why that whole thing is the saddest part: time-sensitive savings! So important...

  6. I missed you! But I was so happy that you got the vacation from the pressures of blogging and facebook and tweeting! I can't wait to get to Heaven, where it's EASY to do what's good for us. You know?

  7. Glad you're back - but understandable for ALL the reasons you listed if you're going to cut back a little. And I laughed out loud at #1. SO true. Sigh.

  9. I'm glad you're blogging again! You were missed!! I gave up facebook for good awhile back. Deleted that blasted thing. Best.thing.ever. I suddenly realized how much better my house looked, how many more things got done, & how much less cranky I was from not being ticked off by (probably well meaning...) idiots commenting on my status or posting idiot statuses. I also did the "Did you see my fb status?!" to my poor husband all the time. Now - getting me to stop pinning inane things while baby girl naps on me...there we may have a problem, haha!

    1. But you know...at least Pinterest never makes us angry, does it? I think there's definitely something to that!

  10. #5 cracks me up! So true. I have a love/hate relationship with this durn computer. I love writing and I want to make my career out of it, but it just seems like you need to be active online to make it as a writer. And yet, I loathe the online living too!

  11. Welcome back! #5 is totally true. I try to squash it when I start to do that in my head.

#5: I am so glad I'm not the only one.
#8: I had never thought about that. Words of wisdom though!
#1: oh, by the way, just buying an exercise bike doesn't do it either :)

    1. Yay! I'm so glad you asked, my darling lurky lurkster friend. You can pop a clicky clicky on that red and white P under my extremely flattering Spider-woman photo up there, or you can go here: http://pinterest.com/houseunseen/ but I know that doesn't hyperlink unless I know how to make it do it, which I do not because I am a caveman. Woman. You know.

  15. I checked out of Facebook/Twitter for three weeks this summer, it was so refreshing and I barely missed it. When I came back I expected 100s of notifications and enquiries as to where I was!! In 3 weeks I'd acquired the sum total of 15, most of which were posts in group pages which were nothing to do with me anyway. The problem of the online world (much as I love it) is that unless you're posting nobody responds, you're quickly forgotten. I do love it though for keeping touch with faraway friends etc.

  16. I can top #5. I was in Mass today composing a blogpost in my head. I said, "Lord, I'm so sorry. Please deliver me."
