7 Quick Takes: I cut my own hair & I might need to cry

(1)
Awesome business idea alert!  A studio or art shop that specializes in black and white photography named...

wait for it....
By the Power of Grayscale
I know!

(my girls and I came up with this incredible, fantastic idea earlier today while discussing their art projects.  They didn't want me to tell you guys because you might "steal my idea".  But I am just. That. Generous. You're welcome.)

(2)
Speaking of girls who are big and awesome, check it:

My 10 year old made these delish biscuity scone-ish things yesterday by herself, from scratch. And they were so good!  And she cleaned up after herself! And the angels sang triumphantly!

All you ladies with only little kids and no big kids and a huge mess in your house and no one to cook or clean except YOU, take heart.  Your day will come.  It will come.  Until then, just breathe into this paper bag....

(3)
Speaking of good news, here's some news that's the opposite of good: I had a minor brain "event", got out the scissors, and proceeded to give myself huge-gantical Texas hair and now I look like Luanne from King of the Hill

This is not open for discussion, seeing as it is fact and all.

I didn't mind it so much yesterday when I first did it, probably because I was temporarily blind or something.

But then today I was trying to take my duck-face portrait (as advised by Mary Kate and Katie   ) and I finally just got to scrolling through the photos and I'm all "SWEET BITS OF DONKEY DUNG, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?!

(4)
Anyway, it also turns out that maybe I don't know how to do the duck face after all:

I tried, guys. I really tried!

(5)
Definitely Cari needs to make me a Luanne/Dweej mashup photo in Photoshop, though, seeing as how I can't bring myself to share the other atrocities hidden so carefully on this here hard drive.  No!  Can't make me!

(6)
Enough about me.  Look at this baby.

She'll be 4 months old on Monday.  FOUR!  MONTHS! And we still don't know what color her eyes are.

Can you believe it?  I thought not.

(7)
Completely unrelated, we've started shopping for a used commuter car for Tommy to take to work so he can leave me my van and then I can go places during the day and take my children to those places with me and not demand that other people come and pick them up and not go grocery shopping on Saturdays because who goes grocery shopping on Saturdays?  EVERYONE ELSE IN THE ENTIRE REGION, APPARENTLY.

So if any of you have owned a Toyota Corolla/Honda Civic/Toyota Camry/Honda Accord/Hyundai Elantra, feel free to share your encouragement/warnings/horror stories/gas mileage averages in the combox/facebook post/twitter responses (I needed a third list of things.  Sorry about that), okey dokey?  Gracias!

    1. Awesome. There's one of those for sale at a nearby dealership that seems to be a good deal...

  2. I know nothing about these cars...aren't I helpful??? But we have always had GREAT luck with Chevy Cavaliers. The things take a licking and keep on ticking. WE had a super old one when I was in high school that my brother and I shared and abused and it was so reliable. Then I got a brand new one in 2000 when I graduated college and it has NEVER been in the shop...NEVER not ONCE! It is now my husband's car and I drive the minivan. My brother had the same experience with his 1999 Cavalier but he totaled it last year. So basically only if you slam it into other things at high speeds will it break down.

  3. She is beautiful, that little bundle of baby rolls!!! I want to squish her.
Your hair does not look Texas. Just stick some gel in those bangs and sweep them to the side, Linda Evangelista-like. Because that's what I do and then I'll feel validated. Resist the temptation to use those cute little barrettes (HOW is that spelled???) you bought for Ceci and Mary. DON'T DO IT!!! Because that's what I DID and it was not good. No.

  4. And don't listen to me, anyway, because my cycle just started and I'm loopy. Sigh. It will pass.

  5. Oh, shut up! You look great! Well, I AM kinda disappointed in the duck face....

  7. Let's try this again where I pay attention AND ACTUALLY SPELL YOUR NAME CORRECTLY:
    Luann/Dwija mashup? On it.

  8. I am disappointed in how bad your hair is NOT! But you are bad at the duck face thing. That could be your claim to shame.

  9. I cut my own hair the other day too. I blame Pinterest. It makes me think I am UberSuperDuperWoman and I can do anything by hand, by myself, at home, with materials I already have on hand.

    Riiiiiight.

(Your hair looks cute, by the way. I think you're fine.)

    (And your daughter is delicious.)

  10. We just bought a 2010 Corolla after going a year and a half with only one car. It was challenging for us because my husband is a cellist and our schedules were erratic.

They claimed 26 city and 34 highway, but we live in the middle of St. Louis and are getting 32 to 34 in the city. Of course a big part of that is my husband driving the interstate to teach and play gigs.

We are all very tall people and I am amazed at how much room there is. It is even comfortable for us in the back seat. The trunk is huge, too. One of the criteria we had was whether a cello case could fit in the trunk. It is comfortable and roomy enough that we take this on the trips to AL to see my family now. Cuts our fuel bill in half.

  11. Ok, don't panic! I can come over tomorrow and help with the hair situation. I have given myself enough bad haircuts by now that I know how to fix them. :)

    1. *Please note* it doesn't look too bad really but I know the feeling of envisioning one thing, cutting your hair, and then seeing something completely different in the mirror afterwards.

  12. I have a '99 Toyota Camry with 214,000 miles on it. I get 25-30 miles per gallon, depending on where & how I am driving. The trunk is huge, but no latch system for the car seat. We've only had to replace the battery, tires, brakes and one hose through the years (bought it from my dad in 2003, who bought it new). We did just choose, in March (?) to sink $1000 of minor/preventative maintenance into it, hoping that buys us a few more years (instead of buying a new used car). I love my Camry!!!

And, seriously, thank you for the hope that someday Destructor will be helpful :)

I can't manage the duck face, either...

    2. If you get Consumer's Reports magazine you will see that Toyota's rate very highly in reliability.

  13. I feel really weird saying this -- especially since the comment before mine is about how to fix it -- so I'm wondering if I need my eyes checked because I thought you're hair looks good! The bangs are totally cute. What am I missing??

  14. It's a passable duck face. You just need to change the angle to where it is above you and to the side.

    1. Great, great. A solid tutorial is really what I need to go from "passable" to "A+ student!". I do like to win at everything, after all...

  15. I drive my hubby's 97 Toyota Camry back n' forth to the office (100 miles a day)...it has a manual transmission, over 300,000 miles on it and ..gets 32 mpg. On the other hand, MY car, a Ford Ranger pick-up truck (manual tranny, 5 speed, 6 cylinder) stays either at home or at business. Only gets 20 mpg.

Great haircut, Dweej...and that's speaking as a professional. Wish I lived closer, would come and blend it all in for you and give you future cutting lessons. Come to NY..from here, we can head to Maine and visit Kelli!!

That 4 month old little sunburst...exquisite!!!!

  17. I am closing down my blog and opening up a photography studio-NOW! And for my commercial I will somehow use that He-Man 'Sexy and I Know It' mash up video.
I will offer artistic black and white duck face portraits just in case anyone you know is interested.

  18. There is nothing better than a fat baby.

LOL at your duck face. Wow I totally typo'd that. Be thankful I caught it. :o

  19. I like your hair. And I love my Hyundai. It's fantastic and I haven't had any problems ever. And the gas mileage is fantastic.

  20. I'm from a little closer to the D than you are, so I'm going to have to say go with GM ;)

Also, can every cathsorority girl do a duckface photo and then we can make a collage? That would be great.

    1. Jenna, We're from your neck of the woods but Ford people... (That's where the paychecks come from anyhow.). Dwij know its not used, but the new Ford focus is super. I never liked them until hubby was doing testing on them and was bringing them home. I was impressed...and they are super reasonable...

  21. i'm busy calculating how long it is until i have a 10 yr old of my very own. t-minus a teensy less than 5 years. eeeeeee

cars. we specialize in cars purchased off craigslist for less monies than my in-laws spent on the playset in my backyard.
honda civic. hatchback. red. 1983. lots and lots of miles. brad drove that baby for a couple years. it cost us $800.
currently he is rocking a 1996 toyota camry. 244,000 miles. it has been good to us but i think we'll have to call hospice soon.

you should buy a very ugly, low-ish mileage, cheap-ish toyota or honda off craigslist. it'll be fuuuuuuun

    1. I drove an '87 Honda Civic hatchback for 24 years, including many trips between Pennsylvania and Illinois. Great car, low maintenance cost (things rarely went wrong), great mileage (close to 40 mpg highway). Loved the hatchback for its ability to cart home cool "finds" from the side of the road (think shelves, dressers, patio chairs, misc. building supplies, etc.).

  22. Aw, you look cute! And look at that fat baby! I have a fat baby of my own who is already 5.5 months and we don't know his eye color, either. I posted a picture on FB and the consensus is that they are blue/green/gray/brown. Haha.

We have owned Hondas, Toyotas, and Mazdas (hubs is currently driving a 2000 Mazda Protege that we have owned for 12 years) and all the little cars will do great for you. I loved my '87 Honda Civic, she got the best gas mileage and was my first car. <3

  23. I had a '99 Civic that I got new and drove for 11 years until fitting 3 kids in the back during a MN winter made me want to cry every day. I think it was up to 135,000 miles or so at that point. I loved that car and its wonderful gas mileage. It claimed 28 city/35 hwy and that was pretty accurate. I'm one of those crazies who tracks mileage every. single. tank. and for years, I averaged just over 30mpg. Now I have a minivan and 19mpg. Sigh.

My husband now drives a 2001 Toyota Echo and that's been very good to us for the past 3 years.

  24. Not being able to do the duck face is a good thing :)

  25. 1995 Toyota Avalon. It had 297,000 miles on it when I sold it last year. Best car I ever had. Truly a luxurious ride. I highly recommend an Avalon! 29 mpg highway.

  26. Hey - PS - Can you share the recipe for those biscuitey scone-ish cookies? They look great and I'd like to make some!

  27. My 16-year old just bought his first car - 2002 Honda Civic with 239,000 miles on it. $3250. Loves it - drives great, very reliable. Good gas mileage.

  28. Justin's sister had a corrolla (98) that she drove into the ground. It lasted forever. We were lucky to find a "basic" model recently when looking for a commuter car. It has no power anything and a standard transmission, but it's perfect and we love it. I can't say anything bad about it and I did a lot of research on these kinds of cars. We also have a Honda CRV and looove that. You can't go wrong. I'd go with a Toyota or Honda because their resale value is always going to be slightly higher. Good luck!

  29. I'm a little late, and I haven't read any of the comments, so I may be repeating what others have said, but I have a Toyota Corolla and I love it. I had one before this one, and it got totaled in a wreck, but it sold me on getting another one because it was that reliable for me. I'm not the best at keeping track of my gas mileage, but I'm thinking on the low 30's end of things for in town driving. Maybe upper 20's at the worst.
