Snowmaggedon, southwest Michigan style

Oh yes. I'm pretty sure you have NOT seen or heard or read enough about this little weather spell we're having.  Definitely not.  No.  Let me fix that for you, yes?

We got some snow, y'all.  Some serious snow.  Even though we're fairly far from Lake Michigan, there is a band of lake effect snow over our house at all times.  Tommy will leave work in Kalamazoo, which is in a valley, and there will be, like a quarter inch of snow that looks like someone spilled some powdered sugar or something.  But then he gets home and our driveway looks something like this:

Wanna see up and down our road right now?  What it looks like POST plowing? You know it.

BUT.  BUT.  The husband of the insane persuasion took his offspring of the equally insane persuasion and played outside with them for....well, I don't know how long it was.  Longer than three seconds, which is how long I was willing to stand out there.  Anyway, took them outside during the warmest part of the day.  Six big degrees above zero, my friends.  Lunatics.

Activate mommy blog sequence!

And since Mary was smart enough to stay inside with mom (read: it was nap time), here is a lovely portrait of her with a lovely avante-garde PurseHat.  Everyone wants one.

  1. I can guarantee you that away down here in the lowly valley of Kalamazoo we are definitely NOT enjoying a little powder sugar puff at the moment! LOL! It's a blizzard out there! The good news is that this current cold snap should freeze the big lake over and that will greatly reduce the lake effect snow! As long as it stays below freezing for the next two months....

  2. Ugh! We also live in a snowbelt of constant lake effect. We live 20 minutes from town/the bay and easily get 4-6 more inches than them every time! It's crazy! They have already pushed back the banks of the roads twice this winter, which is a lot! And it was a wind chill of -12 here today! Ugh curse you Michigan, with your gorgeous falls and summers and your trickery that we fall for every year that keeps us here during the winters!!

  3. Yikes! You're scaring me a little. We're supposed to get that storm tonight. I'm up at the top of NY, and we already have about 9-12 inches on the ground, and it's started snowing. Plus the wind is RIDICULOUS. Plus we contracted the stomach flu to make it more fun... so there will probably not be many pictures of us enjoying this crazy weather.
Annnnd, Oh my goodness, Loving that picture of one of your daughters (I'm horrible with remembering which is which besides Mary...) with her hat over her eyes. It's adorbs. =)
    Enjoy your snow!

  4. Looks like those California babies have turned into Michiganders! And of course the dogs are built for snow. Are they Australian shepherds by any chance?

  5. That's some Pure Michigan right there!

I braved the -13 today to snap a picture, and that was about it! We were the smart ones and played in the snow YESTERDAY when it was 30 degrees and still falling. Muuuch more enjoyable, and my husband actually complimented me on not being a whiny southern brat through all of this.

The purse hat is stylin'! Maybe we'll see it on Project Runway next season.

  6. I love it when little siblings look to older siblings for help, and big siblings help without hesitation. Great photos!

  7. We are west of 131 and it's still snowing! SO MUCH SNOW. I waded in snow up to my thigh to feed the chickens this morning. Stay warm!

  8. And here I was in Florida, thinking our 18 low/38 high was a beast of a winter day.

  10. love the pictures!! - as usual, the children are beautiful (even as they freeze - ding dongs!) - BUT, I have to say, my favorite pics are the ones of the dogs - cracked me up!! - first you have the "and you will see here the two wild dogs lunge for the most vulnerable of the ..." (please read in your best National Geographic voice) - then the next pic shows them "squirrel!" (please scream in your best Up voice) - just cracked me up - kept going back to their pictures - thanks for the laugh - Jen

  11. The rosy cheeks! The eyes! The dogs! Everything is so beautiful. I'm sorry you're snowed in and it's so cold but man, I do miss the weather. California is letting me down big time this "winter."

    1. You know what? Homeschooling is making the snowed-in thing not even matter! It's great. We "went back to school" today just as planned and recess or pe or whatever you wanna call it was snow time. Perfect. No stress. As long as we keep electricity, we are golden!

  12. 6 Above zero sounds tropical...here in MN the high was 15 BELOW - that was as warm as it got! However, tomorrow we are supposed to get almost to zero which may allow a little outdoor time for the kids. They are going nuts with all this snow outside and not being able to play in it. It's like dieing of dehydration in the middle of the ocean...surrounded by water but not being able to drink! Okay, maybe not exactly the same, but we've been stuck in the house for 2 solid days with LOTS of energy to burn!

  13. Your kids were clearly never intended to live in California - they love the snow too much! It was a great, God-inspired move on the part of you and Tommy to up stakes and move to Michigan.

  17. Those red cheeks and twinkling eyes! What fun in the snow! And Mary's hat is going to be the latest style. I might just put my purse on my head and say that I learned it from her!

  18. The snow gets old....but the wonderful pictures of rosy cheeks, smiling faces, and yes, frolicking pets never does. Love it!!

  19. This weather has been crazzzyyy!! I'm almost starting to get used to barricading myself in the house with all this snow and cold....spring, where are thou?!

  20. What great shots! I also prefer to 'appreciate' the snow from afar :)
