Kitchen In Process Pics

Hey. Want some pictures of the in-process kitchen?  Are you tired of hearing about the kitchen yet?  Me.  Too.

We're also trying to figure out what to do about mowing and maintaining a summer version of this house (which we've never experienced, you know?), wondering how to open the pool, and planting the gardens (lettuce, spinach, peas, onions, carrots so far).  Oh.  And an orchard.  Have we talked about the orchard?  Apparently we have one now.

Only by God's abundant grace am I still a functioning human right now.  Thanks St. Joseph!

So.  Kitchen.

The beforebeforebefore pics of the kitchen are HERE if you've not seen them yet.  It is scare bear.

Ready, Freddy?

Day 1- demo

I can't even....WHAT IS GOING ON UNDER THIS SINK??? #paperplate #ducttape

That lower drywall is so fancy

End of day 2

Day 3- leveled floor

Day 4- Electrician gon' make sure we don't burn ourselves down

It's a beautiful thing, those yellow wires are.  Also: rough cut timber under window.  Neato bandito

Weird things behind walls in old houses, lemme tell ya

Today!

A little more....

And could our dining room BE any more crowded?

Or messier?

And here's my view from where I sit

Shall we drive through tonight for dinner despite having a two burner stove on the folding table in the dining room?  Oh yes I do believe we shall.  And we. Will. Love. Every. Bite.

Tomorrow: drywall finished and CABINETS start going in.  Cabinets, y'all.  Cabinets.

  1. I just felt the need to say: bless your heart. Our kitchen reno pics from 2 years ago showed a few, ok, a lot, more empty liquor bottles and wine glasses than your pics- but roughly the same sort of drywall conditions. I vote you go through the happy store drive-thru after your dinner drive thru.

    1. I miss drive-thru daiquiri shops. I've been in Texas for 20 years and I *still* miss them.

  3. My dining table always looks like that to me because the times it is actually clean are so short they don't even register in my brain as having happened.

  4. I can't wait to see it when it's done!!!!!! Love seeing real life renos. Because, yes, I can get on the DIY-ers blog bandwagon, but gimme normal folks getting normal things done any day! Much luck & patience for you. It'll be worth it!

  5. Yay!! I'm so excited for you! If it helps, I remember a Christmas when I was in high school and we were going through a verrrry slow DIY kitchen reno where my mom peeled back the plastic protecting everything from drywall dust to make us breakfast that was served on a folding table. She hated that we spent Christmas morning that way, but I remember thinking it fun that she found a gold cloth for the folding table and real dishes (that were washed in the laundry sink! haha!) to make the day more special. I know it's a pain without a kitchen now, but it will be a funny memory later!

  6. It looks like it's going very fast! I know you are feeling every second tick by, but it really does look like they are making good progress!

    1. Mary, I seriously must have ranted about that thrice daily since the minute we moved in. How is it a thing?!?!?

  8. When we did our old-house-kitchen, we found mold! Also, live wires dangling behind the cabinets! Old house are cray. But that paper plate...lol. That is awesome.

  9. I am a little jelly of your already somewhat established farm. We bought ours last spring with 4 pear trees and 10 acres of corn stubble wasteland. We’re building it up, but it’s overwhelming and slow.

So far the most useful book we’ve read on orcharding (we’ve tried a lot from the library-we have access to every university in OH’s library and boy does my husband use them) is “The Holistic Orchard” by Michael Philips.

My dad did my family’s kitchen when I was a kid. He took it down to the framing because he wanted to dig out the crawlspace and redo all the plumbing and wiring, and tie into the hot water heat system. We lived on the wrap around porch for 3 months. I still don’t know how my mom kept her sanity. As a mom myself now, I am in awe.

    1. Ooooh, thanks for the rec! He has The Apple Grower, also by Michael Philips, but not the one you suggested. Awesome :)

  10. Gah, you are shaming me. Must plant garden.

This is crazy, but while I love all the not-working-on-stuff that goes with having moved into a rental home for the last eight months, I also miss the satisfaction of doing amazing stuff on our house. Granted, when I did our taxes this week, I was HORRIFIED at how much money we spent on our house over a five year period. We literally sold it for $43k than we bought it for, and we just about broke even. We are the opposite of do-it-for-almost-no-money-Borobias. Maybe you could host a class for those of us who struggle to just live with imperfections? I need some of your lemons-into-lemonadeness for myself.

Also, make Paul make a map of your land so we can figure out how far away this orchard is.

Btw, do you want a list of amazing agriculture/agriCULTURE books? (The former being about farming, the latter being about food culture/farming, etc.) Reading this stuff is sorta my hobby.

(Btw, this is FarmAndAway from Instagram. I can't figure out how to leave comments with the other options you have and this is an old handle.)

  11. And what's wrong with paper plates and duct tape? They do a sufficient job of keeping mice from crawling up through gaping holes (although leftover vinyl flooring works better). I'm dreaming of a kitchen reno, but it's way down on the priority list right now. Been here twelve years, but college tuition started 5 years ago and it's likely to continue for a looong time into the future. And our transmission is going. So I've made peace with my dark, dingy, 60's kitchen and my wonderful, loving, non-handy husband. Can I vicariously enjoy your reno?

  12. I’m so excited for you! And a wee bit jeouls, but maybe one day. We have a bathroom floor to tackle next month. :) And we have no idea what we are doing. Should be interesting! lol. Keep us posted! :)

  13. It'll be so worth it when it's finished! And until then - that's what they made drive-thru FOR!

  15. Am I the only one who read "could my dining room BE any more crowded?" in a Chandler Bing voice? ...Because I did ;)

  16. Are you going to be installing floor before after cabinets? I am excited to see the result~ :)

  17. Loved the fencing around the construction for keeping out exploring babies! And the paper plate and duct tape? I'm going to guess prevention of critters coming through some hole. Gross.

  19. Cabinets?! I can't wait to see it when it's done! :-D

The paper plate and duct tape remind me of my house... we just bought our first house - a foreclosure in the fall. The previous owner was trying to vent the dryer down through the crawl space (?!) which is a code violation. Also, the dryer was in the furnace room and the washer in the kitchen. Thankfully, my inlaws gave us a new stackable w/d so they can be in the same room. We had it professionally installed so it vents through the ceiling/roof (??). Now there's a huge random hole in our furnace room. So I put a piece of cardboard and a box on top to keep bugs from getting through. The fanciest.

  21. I am so happy about you pulling out this kitchen. You are living the dream. Begone duct tape and paper plate and all you represent and stand for!
I've never done a real renovation (we just painted the hell out of our kitchen) but we did move everything out of my large walk-in pantry to paint it. The large metal shelves hanging out in the not super large kitchen for quite a while, all the stuff just piled everywhere... The wonderful thing was, when we moved everything back -- aaaahhhhh... the kitchen felt so roomy! :)

  22. Eating out while renovating is a definite yes. Multiple times a week. Just close your eyes and roll down that window, baby. Order the apple slices and everything will be ok. Can't wait to see more, Dwija.
