7 Quick Takes Friday: child labor and drinkin' on a boat

(1)
If you have never been to Michigan, come here.  Its beauty is wildly under appreciated.  And for those of you who love water the way I do, you'll be pleased to know that one is never more than 8 miles from a fresh water lake anywhere in this entire state.

Speaking of which, some friends from our parish invited us over to their house on Saturday, and this is what happened:

"You know me.  This how I do..."

And then he said, "Do you wanna go REALLY fast?"
(2)
You know your friends trust you when they let you hold their 3 month old son while you drink beer on a boat.
(3)
This is the view out their back door.
lucky, happy kids
(4)
But then Cecilia did this, and we knew it was time to go home.
If it's been a while since I've said it, I'll say it again: we are so lucky.

(5)
Since we're on the topic of lucky, let's talk about child labor for a minute.  Specifically, me putting my children to work.  When my husband said "let's move the woodpile into the barn", guess what my kids said?  "Where are my work gloves?" and "Can I help?!?!" and "Don't start without me!."
I mean yes, the alternative was to do indoor chores instead, but still....we are so lucky.

p.s. Check out Paul.  He was workin' it!

(6)
And since you (or I. Whatever. Details!) mentioned Paul, let's chat about how he helped make his very first batch of homemade ice cream (machine from Goodwill.  $3.99 baby!) this week, too.

And then he got to paint a wooden birthday train that another friend, also from our parish, had so sweetly given him.

Wait, I'm sorry....what?  Ohdearlord, no he did not paint all of that on there!  He just did all the black.  The rest are stickers!  Sheesh.  He's only four.  Gaw!

(7)
Anyway, so yeah.  I'm a pretty awesome mom.  I mean, just look at this...um...fortunate child who was "exploring her environment" by being allowed to smear popsicle in her hair and all over herself and onto her tray and probably onto the floor.  Yep.  Had nothing at all to do with me being preoccupied with the interwebz or anything, no sirree.
Party time!

  3. My kids would much prefer working outside to inside too. They actually will go help the people who deliver our wood stack it. And the popsicle picture - Priceless. I have one of Pi covered in beans or paint or maybe both. It seemed whenever I turned around to tend to Peanut, Pi was covering herself with something. And funny you had the same instinct I did, grab the camera to take a picture of the food covered child. Love it!

  6. I think its great that your kids wanted to help! I can't think of many kids now who WOULD want to help. It just shows what great parents you are that they have this great attitude towards life. Kudos to you both!!! If I were a kid, I'd love to be a part of your family ... you have a lot of fun!

  7. We do have a lot of fun, that's true....but my house is always a wreck, so I guess that's the tradeoff. Consider yourselves warned! ;)

Rebecca, our parish is amazing and fantastic and wonderful. It is one of the very top reasons that this move was sugh a good one for our family!

  15. I'm glad I'm not the only one who lets kids explore with food in order to gain a few moments doing something else! Great popsicle shot.

  16. Looks like you guys have been having lots of fun! I don't want children but sometimes I think, "it would be nice to have someone else to do the dishes," but then I remember about how they smell, and cost money and have to be fed all the time and I'm over it.

  17. Dwij,
You are doing amazing things with your children. Sure they may not meld into society as adults, but who wants that anyway ;)
Seriously, good job. My kids think it looks like more fun than our house.
