Job News

Well, Tommy has finally heard back about the job he interviewed for three weeks ago.

He didn't get it.

Now before you go feeling all bad for us, I want you to know that Tommy was actually kinda relieved.  Crazy, right?  'Cause here's the thing- if they had offered him the job, he would have to accept it.  It would be  foolish not to, for one thing, and as a condition of his unemployment benefits, he is required to accept any employment that's offered to him.

But the fact of the matter is that the job is pretty darn far from our house.  It would mean we'd have to buy a second car and spend oodles of money on gas until eventually we saved up enough money to buy a house closer to the job.  And the kind of work, although he's more than qualified to do it, is definitely not his ideal way to spend the day.  It's the tedious side of office work, not the problem-solving side.

Now we're finding the blessing in this.  Remember the world's best recruitment video?  Apparently it really was the best in the world, because Tommy is applying to work for the DNR.  And he's truly excited about the prospect!  Decent pay, good benefits, retirement, and they supply their agents with an official DNR vehicle, so we wouldn't have to buy another car.  Woo hoo!

And the reason I'm telling you all of this is that yesterday, on the same day that he got turned down for that job, he got his pre-application law enforcement test results back from the DNR.  He passed every category handily and was able to submit his completed application.  Another woo hoo!

So, there it is.  Still on the path, waiting for it to lead us where we're supposed to be.  Applying to new positions every day and meanwhile making plans to make a little money off of our property starting in the spring.

Thank you for walking with us on this journey.  It's wonderful not to have to do it alone!

  3. ooooh! a DNR job sounds fantastic!

  4. It really kinda does, doesn't it? He is excited about the prospect of being outdoors so much and learning to snowmobile and stuff. With his previous law enforcement experience, I've got my fingers crossed that he's a shoe in!

  5. it's so great (and refreshing) to read about your positive outlook on this! It sounds like the DNR job would be more fun anyway :)

  6. Prayers and more prayers. I agree that it's all in how you choose to view it. You are an inspiration! I mean that. Hugs....

  7. I think you're totally on the right track with this. I really think things are meant to be (or not) and the right thing is coming to you.

  8. DNR is Michigan is a sweet gig. I feel like Tommy's the sort of worker who will put his heart into whatever job he has, and I know that prospective employers notice that quality immediately.
We'll keep on keeping you in our prayers.

  9. I am so happy to hear that you all are okay with the result. This DNR gig sounds wonderful! I will keep it in prayer and your pregnancy too!

  10. He tried to act all nonchalant when was opening the test results envelope...."Yeah, I don't really care if I didn't pass. Probably wouldn't work out anyway" and then of course his scores were super excellent and he started singing in a happy falsetto voice and dancing with the dogs.

I really, honestly know that things happen for a reason. Lord knows I've thanked God for unanswered prayers more than a few times in my life! I am getting a little impatient to know how all of this is going to turn out, though...

  11. Well bummer. But I'm glad to hear you're all feeling pretty okay about it.

The DNR sounds like a great option! I have my fingers and toes crossed for you guys!

  12. Hoping everything turns out the way it should. And I hope you're feeling a little bit better at least.

  13. So sorry about the first job but I'm glad you guys have another prospect already in site! Also, dancing with dogs is one of the best ways to celebrate passing tests, trust me I'm a professinal student. :)

I'll be praying for you guys!

  14. Sorry to hear that he didn't get the job, Dwija. We'll keep you guys in our prayers. The DNR job looks kind of cool for the area that you're in and not as dangerous as the enforcement job he used to have! Btw, the soundtrack to that DNR video is something else. My ears ache!

  15. Oh, it is the *worst*, isn't it? My gosh. It's terrible. But yes, after working in dangerous gang neighborhoods in Southern California, I think talking to hunters about the proper precautions wouldn't be quite as stressful. He especially likes the idea of being outside. "In an office" is definitely a type of imprisonment for him :)

  16. You are so stinkn adorable and I love your attitude. Every morning when I ask St. Joseph to pray for my husband, I ask him to pray for yours too...

  17. I'm a firm believer in those doors, the ones that close only to have others open.

Hey, DNR is almost up my alley since I teach courses on gun safety and participate, as well, in Hunter training. It's a good field for your hubs...will call on St. Anthony later and put in a request on behalf of your Tommy!

  18. Patty said it above that doors open and close for a reason. I totally need to find out what DNR is. Where I'm from DNR means Do Not Resuscitate and I'm sure you mean something else! :)

  19. Hahahaha! It also means that, here, which is very confusing. The DNR we're talking about is the Department of Natural Resources. They protect and promote usage of the the state's natural resources including fish and game, forests, lakes, and rivers. I think he really just wants an excuse to drive a snowmobile and get paid for it ;)

  20. Sending love and prayers and questions. What's a DNR job?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Here in NY, it's either the DEP or DEC; cornfusing as all hell!
Department of Environmental Conservation...is the regulatory agency for hunting, fishing, etc. but...the NY Department of Environmental Protection is a law enforcement agency which protects the water supply for New York City. (To hell with the rest of the state, their only concern is NYC). As such, you can't pave your driveway or barely breathe near any brooks/streams (even on your own land) that feed into city reservoirs..the DEP police will hunt you down!

Michigan's DNR seems like a more reasonable blend of our two agencies.

  22. Honestly, their main goal is to encourage responsible hunting and fishing. Michigan loves their nature lovers!

@Daenel- it stands for Department of Natural Resources :)

  23. Hey, the MI DNR is great news!!! I worked for them for a summer, and it was one of my best summers EVER!!!! Great organization to work for! Hoping for the best for him and your family!!!

  24. Twice in my life I have not gotten jobs and it broke my heart. Each time what happened next turned out to be better than the job. Keep your faith and hold on tight!

  25. You guys have such an awesome attitude to life. Good luck with the DNR application, Tommy!

  26. Wishing you all the best of luck as this journey continues! Sometimes things just fall into place, and it sounds like you may be on the road to that happening. I hope and pray it's so! You have a great attitude and I know your faith will help carry you.

  27. Wouldn't it be great for Tommy to have a job that is good and that he loves?! That would be awesome! We will pray that Tommy can get this job and you can all sigh a big sigh of relief!

  28. Dwija, as you know, I am not a religious woman but I do believe that there is a reason for the way things happen. Too many times, I have been disappointed by something only to find out that something great happens because of that disappointment. As you know, we are struggling right now too. I have been able to take full advantage of Arizona State Medical (free) and get the counseling I so desperately need from everything that has occurred since my Dad passed away. When we were employed and had our own insurance, it wasn't possible because the co-pays were $35 a week and I had no one to watch Connor. Now, Michael is home and I don't have a co-pay. This is the silver lining in my cloud right now.......every cloud has one! I love you and miss you and wish we could discuss this over a long walk like old times!

  29. Oh Sharon, I do miss our chats. I just feel like we could hang out forever and ever and ever. And just look at your positive outlook on this! I'm so happy you're getting the counseling you need. And it really is so nice, in it's own way, having hubby home, isn't it? Tommy has been my absolute savior during this yucky sick time. I seriously don't know how my kids would have survived if he had been working for the last 5 weeks! *Hugs*

  30. Well it sounds like that job would have been a challenge to enjoy, whereas the DNR one sounds like something where he would be happy for more than just his pay cheque. Keeping my fingers crossed!

  31. well, I'll be darned.

    Love you, Dweej :)

  32. Good for you looking on the bright side! My husband has been turned down for so many jobs this year and he gets so discouraged! I know what you guys are going through. While he has a job now, it is far from our house and doesn't pay well so he's also on the hunt. Good luck to both our hubs! I'll keep praying for you guys!!

  33. once again, minutes of my life were wasted watching the DNR recruitment video. my fiancee came up behind me while i watched it and said, "oooooh, that looks cool." I guess it's a guy thing. I hope Tommy does it and has fun! :)

  34. I hope this other job works out for him - for all of you! Tomorrow is my last day of work before we move to NYC and I don't have a job lined up for when I get there. I am panicked, so I can't even imagine how difficult things have been around your house. I'm rooting for him!!!

  35. I saw your Twitter stream and was wondering if you heard about the job. Commuting a long distance can really, really have a bad impact on your way of life. Especially with the bad weather in Michigan.

The DNR thing - I have my fingers doubled crossed and my Novenas ready for you.

  36. I watched it and I want to work for them. How do you apply?

  37. Here's the link to the DNR website, Kristina: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr It's a bit of a process, but I think definitely worth it!

  38. Thanks! Maybe if I get a job there, that will be just the push my husband needs to pack our stuff and go. (hoping)

  39. Just got back from my vacay, and was checking my regular blogs.

Will keep praying that God places him in the job he is meant to be in...and soon!
