Thank You

Today I got an email.

Today I got an email that touched my heart and moved me so that even if every single one of you unfollowed this blog and not a soul ever read anything I wrote ever again, I would still gazelle leap across my living room.

Because sometimes you're not sure if you should be spending so much time writing about all this mundane stuff, and you start questioning whether or not what you're doing is capital-G Good enough, and you start to think that there are enough sayers of things out there who say the things so much better than you ever could and what you've been saying lately is just so much fluff and ridiculousness anyway that perhaps you should just take a break.  Take a step away.

And then you get an email and they say "thank you" and "yes you should keep writing about this mundane stuff" and "you've done for me the unexpected, the seemingly impossible, and for that I am grateful".

And then you do gazelle leaps across your living room.  Because only the Holy Spirit could bring two people like us together for just that purpose.  And that gives me purpose.

Thank you to all of you who keep writing and touching all of our hearts, making the world a smaller place, building community beyond the confines of your community, even though it's a lot of work and it can be exhausting and sometimes you wonder if it's worth it.

I'm telling you today: It's worth it.

Thank you to all of you who keep reading, because writers with no readers are not much.  Not much at all.

And thank you for your email, friend.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

But if you're not much of a reader and you just like looking at pictures of what we did on a Saturday, I got some of that too.  Enjoy!

  3. You put your "self" on the page when you write, and that makes the difference because your life--crazy and funny and everything--is a witness. God who is working in your life touches people in many ways through your witness. God bless you!

  6. You are one of the best, funniest and most awesome writers out there! I look forward to reading your posts, even the mundane ones, which are usually the funniest. You HAVE to write a book - your public demands it of you!

    1. Paula, you are such a supportive, encouraging friend. Thank you! But this book...I'm pretty sure my poor little brain is too clunky to think in terms of more than 500 words at a time ;)

  7. That is such an awesome email to get. Good for you! I got a similar one recently and know exactly the feeling you describe. Keep writing! We may not touch everyone every day, but making the difference to just one person makes blogging well worth it.

  12. Oh goodness, so happy you were given such a sweet gift. Your voice has been a comforting little gift out here for all of us. Thanks so much for keeping what you say and think so real and honest. It's lovely, really.

It's funny you wrote this today...I've been going back and forth lately about just stopping writing altogether, lately. It's a temptation on a daily basis ;)

Hope you and your sweet family are well!

  14. How wonderful! Good for you!!! I remember getting a message like that once and thinking that made all the stress of opening myself up to ridicule and criticism worth it. :) Love the pictures, too.

  15. Well, I can't top it, but I certainly can agree with all of it. Love ya, Dweej. You are an inspiration.

And when I widdled my blog feed to nearly nothing, you made the cut, because you don't make your reader work or fret, but you don't pretend to have it all figured out, either.

    1. As usual, MB, you pick just the right words. I love the idea of people not fretting. I hadn't ever thought about it, but I feel like that's always been one of my missions in life... :)

  17. I can't believe you've been writing this much with one newborn let alone a gaggle of other kids. Keep up the good work. I wish you'd send them down here to Camp Lynch.

  21. A newbie blogger chiming in here. Dweej, it was because of your blog that made me actually get to writing again. I hadn't written anything since....a long time. And man, it feels good, it really does. Totally helps the mind let off steam.

Yes, the 'mundane' stuff is the best. Your brain, unfiltered, is really great to read :) Keep it up, darlin!

  23. Dweej, I've been rereading and catching up on your ENTIRE BLOGGING history since last week (in between work things, that is) and I second that e-mail writer. You verbalize so well my own personal journey ... it's like reading "The Never-Ending Story" or something. You know, when Elliott starts reading that huge tome and realizes he's reading about himself at that very moment? Anyway, what you said to Audrey for you: "You are an incredible writer. Don't you EVER quit!!!" (Audrey, too.)
