Get Back Into Shape after Baby vol. 1

Accountability time!

I know this is probably gonna be really boring for most of y'all (forgive me) but I did warn you that this here blog was set to be my ticket back to normal-me once baby arrived.  So here I am with my Biggest Loser-esque weigh-in and measurement fest.

Also, if you're scandalized by photos of women in running shorts that are way too tight, then avert your eyes prontisimo!  Click away!  Because I wasn't about to go out and buy bigger workout clothes, no sir.

Alright, here goes.  At 6.5 weeks postpartum....

Weight: 151 lbs
Toes: really attractive

Measurements...

chest: 36.5"
waist: 32"
love handles+gut: 39.5"
hips: 42"

Super embarrassing photographic evidence...

nope, not pregnant

bossing someone around
And just so you know, I don't believe in "low fat" foods or counting calories.  So let's not expect too much from these shenanigans, mkay?  Oh, also not big on exercise.  So there's that.

  1. I would die of happiness aaaaand cancel my WW membership to be 151. Just saying.

P.s. are you one of those lucky ladies for whom lactation is slenderizing? Jealous much.

    1. Well, it does make me starving. But I don't think that's inherently slenderizing, seeing as I combat the feeling with buttered bread... :)

  2. I'd love to be 151, too. I always end up losing weight during pregnancy and gain weight while nursing. Sigh.

    1. I gained weight the first few weeks after she wwas born, too. It was so sadbut I have a lot of milk and she's helthy, so I try to look on that bright side...but it's hard. Super hard.

  3. Dwij, You can do it! Weight loss is so hard for me, mostly because I hate exercise and love baked goods. I'm glad your body is well enough that you can start working out.

Jenny, don't feel bad - even if I meet my WW goals and lose 45 more pounds I still wouldn't be in the 150's. Why don't we just assume that we are much taller than Dwija. ;)

  4. you look GREAT! But you are probably personally frustrated...so be healthy and exercise and then look 100 times better instead of 99 times better than I ;)

  5. YES! No low fat and minimal exercise? You are speaking my language. And I need me some diastasis help pronto. I think I may be making things worse... I'm pretty much at my normal weight (I think...I don't have a scale!) but my relaxed state belly is still sporting the preggie look.

    1. Diastasis recti post coming soon! I finally got my exercises from her and those are what I'll do exclusively for the first few weeks.

    2. I was just thinking about you and this issue today. I found out last night that we are getting a surprise baby sometime in the spring....so I'm trying to figure out what to do about the fact that I hadn't finished losing the baby weight and don't want to end up permanently fat. And thinking that I need to work on my abs so that I don't fall apart. I'm more concerned about this than the fact that we don't have any money for getting a car that can hold three kids or to pay for another home birth right now. Vain?

    3. MightyMighty - congrats and good luck! Try the Summer Sanders Prenatal Workout video. It has tons of ab work in the first trimester to help prevent diastasis. I can't say it kept me from gaining a ton of weight during pregnancy, but it has made it easier to jump into my postpartum exercise.

    4. Congrats, Mighty! My two eldest are just 15 months apart so I was definitely not in good shape once #2 was born but I was able to get back into shape, actually the best shape of my life, after she came along, so don't worry that starting at a higher weight curses you to to a life of bigger sizes. You can do it!

  6. I agree with Jenny...who do I have to kill to weigh that little??? All that aside though, I'll be jumping back on the low-carb bandwagon after our little guy is done cooking!

    1. It's all about the clothes, girl. If I could get 'em on, I know I wouldn't be even half this determined :)

    2. I'm so with you there - it's only the clothes I love keeping me interested in losing my last 10 lbs. (I'm nearly 7 mos pp at this point)

    3. The soonest I've ever gotten into my favorite jeans post partum is 9 months. So...well, March? UGH! I have to wait until March!

  9. You weigh (MUCH) less then I do and you have had 2 extra kids (in comparison)

that being said, try reading "The Weigh Down Workshop" It is all about losing weight "God's Way"

    1. Ooooh, sounds interesting! I was actually pondering the meaning of something along those lines earlier today, so I'll have to investigate.

    2. It deals a lot with when you eat and why you eat. Praying when you aren't "really hungry" (your tummy isn't growling) knowing when you are satisfied vs stuffed. It is an awesome way of life. I am working on it daily.

  10. The only reason I lost my baby weight is because I gave birth to one of those babies that is only happy when held by a walking adult. Walking the equivalent of 5 extra miles every day was effective but it was a pretty sucky way to lose weight. I don't recommend it:P

  11. You look so good! 151 ain't nothin. That'll drop off you so fast. I can't believe you're only 6.5 postpartum and you look that awesome. I'm still pregnant and weighing in at, roughly, size elephant, so that's that.

  12. Something to ponder AND make you feel a little better - losing weight is 90 percent diet. So exercise (though greatly beneficial IMO) isn't entirely necessary to lose the weight. The diet - no low fat part? Low fat schmo fat - it isn't healthy to eat low fat - lots of chemicals and weird (read - SHOULD be inedible) ingredients. Just eat decent foods, veggies, fruit, whole grains, BUTTER! (you can make your own for goodness sakes - that's awesome!) and indulge every once in a while. Keep it simple. Good luck - and you are beautiful regardless....but I totally get the wanting to fit into your clothes part.

  13. My favorite explanations for my body after I've had a baby (5 and counting) are that I'm big boned, muscular and still loosing the water I retained. I say those words to myself just before polishing off the last piece of pie that some generous person brought over post delivery. You are darn lucky to have even been able to get the shorts on. I would have had to have jumped off the roof!!!

  14. I think you look awesome AND so YOUNG!

(Neglectful Mom----my baby just pulled down my #2 son's plate that still had food on it from supper. Think she is still hungry?)

  15. I think you look great! And seriously, how do you get your ponytail to do that cute flick-up-at-the-end thing? Something I've been striving for since I was ten and have yet to achieve haha :)

    1. Okay, seriously...my kids and I gave me a 5 minute at home layered haircut. And we took video! I need hubby to edit and then I'll share :)

  16. Dweej, you are absolutely gorgeous!! It's so hard not to fit into those darn clothes afterwards.
P.S. When the heck did your hair get so long?

  17. I'm 3 months postpartum and I still dare not have pictures of me take sideways. Or frontways. Or without a baby to cover the damn baby pooch. Sigh.

    Go, you!

  18. i may or not be obsessed w/ my transverse abs. i still praise the day my midwife w/ kid 1 revealed to me the secret of the diastasis.

  19. Echoing the amazing awsomeness that is how you look right now-- seriously, I have never and will never look that good that soon.
If you want something to kick your a*%, make you feel like you want to throw your TV out the window, but seriously help take the pounds off fast, her first name is Jillian, last name Michaels. The worst and best thing that happened to me post partum. 20 minute workouts are about all I can stomach thinking about and she gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Ok I am done advertising for her- I kind of hate myself for it.

  20. Right up my alley! I have miscarriage and post-partum weight to lose (50 lbs total) with a slowing metabolism and mounting food reactions to deal with. #sigh

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would say that you are super brave to take pictures of yourself that soon postpartum....but you look amazingly great! And how tall are you? We are the same freakin' weight (I actually clocked in at 152 this morning...whatever) and my fifth baby just turned one!!!

What helped me get back into exercising was signing up for a half-marathon that happened 7 months after giving birth. I'm not saying it helped me lose weight because I ate whatever I wanted. But it got me back to running faster than I would have without that goal.

I find that when I cut out drinking and eating after dinner, I lose weight slowly but steadily. But really, who wants to live like that???

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shoot, last summer I weighed almost that much and didn't have a new baby to blame - just laziness. I lost it all and got back to my 20-year-old pre-baby weight and leanness by eating more fat (there is a caveat to that, so let me know if you want details) and not counting a single calorie. And your body composition (weight, muscle tone, etc) really is 80-90% diet.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Height is a very important metric in these sort of things. How tall are you? You look great, if I looked that good I'd never bother with diet and workout. Nuts, I'm 205# / 5'8", and I still don't bother.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I'm 5'6"...but really, I am small boned. So I don't have much of an excuse. And none of my clothes fit! If I had the money for a whole new wardrobe, I might not bother either :)

    2. Okay, the clothes thing is valid. Otherwise, bah, you look fine. :-)

  24. Dwij-You just put another life on the planet. You're amazingly talented. And you're absolutely beautiful and a few pounds here or there doesn't change that. OH.... AND low fat food sucks! Sending you hugs and a virtual glass of red. Because I figure you can have a virtual one....

  25. Three things: My Fitness Pal online is a great tracker for calories and exercise. Helps to keep me mindful of my eating when I'm inputting data on it. Also, Lindsay Brin has a great series of DVDs to heal the diastasis recti and to lose weight postpartum called "60 day slim down." Finally, I found a FB group called "Operation: Get my Body Back" which has been very encouraging. All three have been verrrrry helpful to me as I lose the last 10 dang pounds. You can do it.

  26. I'm with the 1,000 other commenters here..151 is awesome and you look great!! Geez girl, put your 5-kid-body-and-flaunting-it away! :) I'm dreading stepping on the scale at 6 weeks...I'm only 5'4" and I very nearly hit 200 pounds this pregnancy. Not cool.

  27. You look great Dwija but I loathed having that extra weight for so long post-partum. It's just so uncomfortable, and hot, and nothing fits and....ahh! Count nutrients, not calories. That's what I tell myself. It has helped keep my weight down for the pregnancy. I couldn't stop myself from making snickerdoodles this week, however. I'm afraid my will has been compromised for month 7.
