5 Springtime Favorites

1) Dansko sandals

Most importantly: the shoes from the picture in that post.

I heart my Dansko mary-jane sandals with the unbridled joy of a thousand toddlers in the germ-encrusted ball-pit at Chuck E. Cheese.  Apparently the exact style that I have, purchased TEN YEARS AGO (10. Years.  The most durable shoes known to human and beast), is no longer available, so the Maise, linked above, is the closest I can find.

They're spendy, I know.  Really really I know.  They are the most expensive shoes I own by far.  But I literally am more comfortable (my feet and back) when I am wearing those sandals than when I am barefoot or wearing any other pair of shoes.  They actually facilitate my happiness (that's the phrase you need to use when you're talking about how much you need them.  You're welcome.).

2) Faded Glory maxi skirt

From most expensive to least expensive, let's chat about this skirt from Wal-Mart.

So soft.  Super flattering.  Totally affordable.  Comes in a zillion colors.  Pair one with your Dansko sandals and own your spring (and summer.  and fall.) in the face.

3) Servus Northerner rubber boots

The mud, the mud, the mud.  Our first spring here in Michigan, my big kids and I blew through rubber boots like you would not believe.  Soles ripping off, holes appearing around the ankles, tears happening at the top.  I mean...a mess, y'all.  We needed some legit boots and QUICK so I finally broke down and shelled over the bucks for these Servus Northerner boots from the farm supply store and they are excellent.  They've held up to serious use for several years now so in the end were cheaper than replacing cheapo boots every six months.

4) Lockube

Are you doing some spring cleaning and house fancifying these days?  These shelves from Menards are my new pet.  They slide together like a puzzle.  No tools, no hardware.  You can choose from four or five different lengths and design your unit the way you need it.  We have a nine cube unit in the mudroom and a four cube unit in our tiny upstairs bathroom (you can see pics of that one in action here) and they're working out great.  The fact that I could just slide the shelves together in literally two minutes (maybe less) was a huge selling point for me because children.

5) The Tale of Three Trees
Maaaaaaaaaaaybe I cry a little more easily than the average human being.  Maybe.  Fine, definitely.  But this book, wow.  It's a great one for Lent.  We checked it out from the book cart at our parish as part of Paul's sacramental prep and I read it out loud to him the morning of his first confession before he left for his retreat.  Bawling.  I want it for our own library for keeps.

  1. I love my Danskos so much. Maybe they are secretly ruining my feet but I can't wear other shoes for very long. And these red ones!! Super cute!
No way they are spendy. Just think about it. You spent $135 (although I bet they weren't that then) for 10 YEARS OF SHOE WEARING! Pardon the caps but that's $13.50 per year on shoes! That's so CHEAP!
I hope you don't hate me when I buy the same ones :)

  3. Your shoes! Again. They are here. Ah! I like you how you phrased it so that I can gently encourage my husband to think me purchasing them to be a brilliant idea. My happiness is pretty important for all who live in this home of ours. And yes to the book. We have it and have read it so many times, but not this Lent! Fail! Adding it to their book pile tonight! or maybe in the morning :)

  7. Let's talk. I have the skirt and love it. Love. Want it in more colors. Expecting my fourth in less that five years and skinny would not be an adjective to describe me... talk time... what type of top do we wear with a skirt like that? And...go...

    1. I was just about to ask the same question!!!

T-shirts don't work for me anymore (permanent baby belly + nursing boobs = bad curves in the torso).

    2. Flowy patterned blouses with the neckline that most flatters your figure. For me that is a henley or v-neck. Patterns camoflage that baby bulge, especially if it isn't clingy.Obviously you'd have to go with a plain skirt if you go with the pattern, unless you can figure out one that goes with the patterns that skirt comes in.

For people with tighter figures: use a fitted t-shirt or cami.

    3. When my torso is needing some camouflage (read: always) I like a dolman sleeve top with the maxi. That way it's not long like a tunic, which might look vaguely flower-childish with the long skirt. The other option I like is layering- wear the t-shirt or cami but then put a cropped, square denim jacket over.

  8. also, my husband always gets sad when I read your reviews of the 'spendy stuff'. I think the last time was make up for under-eye bags... check. And now the sandals. I've got a feeling I need them and so the saving begins...

  10. I'm a psycho. I *only* wear Danskos. I have seven pairs, two in the Mary Jane style and two in the sandal style and they rock my summer. They are a million dollars but I luurrrvv them so muchly. Also, I have a million of those cheap maxis now because Walmart is the only store for, literally, 120 miles.

  13. I have been converted…just bought my first pair of Danskos last month. I scheme to wear them every day if I can. To those concerned with cost, my advice is to get fitted at a certified Dansko retailer (can be found via Dansko website), try on shoes, and then scour Ebay for new or gently used pair in your size. Mine are new with the box for $96 including shipping. Pro-tip I learned from Grace a camppatton. :-) Yay for happy feet and backs!

  14. If you love the idea of Danskos, but they don't quite it correctly, make sure yo check out Sanitas. They are made in Sweden (the companies split and dansko outsources to China now) and have a bit different fit...from what I have been told, more like the original Danskos. I have had two pair for five years and wear them almost every day.

  15. That book IS so feely. And would you know? I was at the store on Monday looking at Danskos thinking, "Are they worth it??" You say yes...

  16. Little known fact, Dansko has an online outlet store. As long as you know your size the prices can be fabulous (and know that the sizes can vary a bit depending on style. The footbed is consistent across the first letter of the style name - so all styles that begin in a C have the same footbed, but it will be different from those that begin in an F etc. If you look only at the soles of various shoes you can see what I'm describing.) I've ordered few pairs from the outlet and all have been in perfect condition! https://www.danskooutlet.com/Womens/Footwear/View%20All
