Kitchen: After pics!

Before we get to the good stuff, let's all say a prayer of gratitude that our family's eight guardian angels are apparently great friends with St. Florian and somehow worked it out that our house didn't burst into immediate flames an unknown number of months ago when this happened:

Can you guess what you're looking at?
Singed, rodent-chewed wires.  I mean, you can SEE that they are....I mean, they're burnt.  They were laying in extremely flammable materials between two wooden slats and they are burnt.  Yet our home still stands.

Just staying alive is such a miracle, don't you think?  How many things like this happen and we never even know about it?

So!  Clearly this remodel was essential and totally worth it and the gorgeousness of the results is just a side-benefit, thankyouJesus.

If you've not seen all the before pics, you can see them here (that's the first house tour from before we moved in) and here (that one is the kitchen specific one).  But let's use these three as our before photos for this post:

And like so for the now....

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, I still can't believe it's real!

Let's look at it some more things.

I had to include this one because look at Lizzy's face.  All the loling.

This isn't the last you'll be hearing about this kitchen (much to your chagrin!) though because it still needs flooring (that is just the subfloor painted) and a backsplash.  But for now....yes, for now this will do quiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite nicely.

Maple cabinets with natural stain
Nevamar laminate countertops in Lunaria Shadow
Fridge- Whirlpool 4 door french door
Dishwasher- Whirlpool Gold
Cooktop- Whirlpool (gas)
Microwave- Whirlpool
Base cabinet oven - Frigidaire
Sink- Kohler (18 guage stainless steel; 9" deep basins)
Faucet- Moen Harlon
Hardware- Cosmas, black (handle : drawer cup pulls : knobs )
Wall paint: Yolo Colorhouse Bisque .06 , eggshell
Built-ins: Dutch Boy Kitchen and Bathroom paint, white (no-tint base), semi-gloss

Will you say a prayer of thanksgiving with me?  What an incredible experience this has been.

If you have any questions or want more details, leave them in the combox here or on the fb page or twitter and I'll write another post with answers and pics.

Edit to add: You can find the "another post with answers and pics" riiiiight here

  1. It looks great. Your before pics look a lot like our before pics. What was up with people choosing those cabinets? Were they free or something? I'm serious I kind of wonder if they were like, free, or something.

  5. Hello! What a beautiful kitchen. I have 3 young girls (5,3 6mos) and we are in the process of redoing our kitchen. I am debating about a single sink or a double sink, can you explain why you chose the double sink anf if you think it works well for a house with lots of dishes. Also, where do you store your plates? Near the dishwasher? Thanks!!

  6. WOWZA! That went from me being a little scared to come into the kitchen to me wanting to jump right in there and get making some coffee and eggs. So happy for you!!! You did a beautiful job! :)

  7. Wow it's just beautiful! I feel as if it looks so much bigger, and fresher, and makes the whole house look brand new! That's kinda how it is with kitchens though isn't it? Kitchens make the house the age it feels. I also think you got it done uber-fast; although I wasn't the one living through it with a herd of kids, so it probably felt like eras of purgatory. Love it all!

  10. Why did you decide to do a separate stove top and oven? I assume you had to reroute gas lines?

    1. The countertop is laminate from Nevamar in a color called Lunaria Shadow. I'll be sure to add that above to the materials list :)

  13. Wow, it looks like a dream kitchen! Congrats. And I love the way those original built-ins and the brick work beautifully with the made-over kitchen. It's sleek and efficient-looking, but also has so much charm and character. You guys did a great job.

    1. These were custom made by a local cabinet maker, which was surprisingly not more expensive than getting real wood cabinets from a national brand!

  15. Whoa. Wow. Just wow! My 12 yo was just looking over my shoulder declaring "unbelievable. wow." I agree. I also declared that I'd come live in your kitchen just to enjoy the fridge. So in love with that finery. Well done!

  20. Oooh, pick me, pick me! Faucet height: Does it cause water to splash out of the sink? I love the pull down sprayer and rather industrial height, but it makes me nervous and, a year later, I am still suffering with my old sink and leaky faucet because I can't decide! Help! :)

    1. Go for it, Karen. I have one like it, and adore it. The only time splashing is an issue is if you leave it on the 'spray' setting rather than the regular stream (mine toggles back and forth). If the kids come to wash their hands, and it's on 'spray, 'it inevitably splashes off of the dishes that are perpetually in the sink. Even then, it only leaves some drops around the sink, nothing major.

Actually, my main concern when I bought ours was that the kids might pull out the faucet and spray each other in the kitchen!

  22. Not that you want it, but I have a thought. The only thing to me that still could use a tweak is that big white pantry guy. Still a thousand times better than it was, but what if you got some maple veneer (assuming that's what the cabinets are?), stuck that on there, and did your own trim boards around the outsides to mimic the cabinets, and put on matching hardware? I think it would blend in with the rest really nicely, and look custom. I think Cari (from the clan) did something like that with her wainscoting once, and it was fab.

    1. I agree that adding trim would help cabinets to match, but instead of veneer, what if she just painted them a nice color (blue/grey, green, etc). There are tons of design blogs out there that have mixed cabinetry.

  23. Am I the only one who is completely awed by the fact that you painted the subflooring? It's like "flooring may not be in the budget right now ... but I don't have to live with ugly."

    1. I'm in awe as well! Way better than the crappy stick-on tile we threw down in our bathroom as a 'temporary' solution to get rid of the carpet. (Temporary, as in, still there almost 2 years later...)

  26. I spy with my little eyes…a house that doesn't have white trim! Are you keeping it like that? We just bought a meticulously maintained home that was built in 1990 so we are SWIMMING in oak trim. I just can't. even. begin. to think about painting it and I seek solidarity outside of Pinterest because I think I'm the only non-white woodwork homeowner in the woooorld.

    1. Me me me! Our house was built in 1995, and I am actually loving the wood trim in it. And according to a real estate agent, it's coming back in style a bit. The thought of painting it all white (especially the beautiful 6-panel doors) is too much for me. Plus, it hides dirt wayyy better than white.

    2. Oh man, I'm a sucker for white trim and making bad decisions, so here I am, staying up until 2 a.m. every night, painting that trim. Hashtag what was I thinking.
