I plopped my hair (with video!)

Ever since Mary was born a little over three years ago, when my hair turned against me and suddenly became almost-but-not-quite curly, I've been in a little bit of a war with my own head.

Remember that unfortunate Luanne haircut I so cruelly gave to myself? I'm not proud. Learn from my foolishness, friends. That's when I realized that if giving excellent haircuts were easy no one would be paying other people to do it for them.

Then a few weeks ago I saw someone (on fb maybe? I don't remember) mention "plopping" her naturally curly hair and I was like "Plopping? Who in their right might would ever call anything plopping? Can I please speak with whomever coined this phrase so I can have an earnest word with him/her and explain how that word conjures up images of turds drawn by the younger brothers of myself and my cohorts at the tender age of 12? Do they not care about my delicate psyche? "

And then after THAT I looked it up and decided that "plopping" (shudder) seemed easy enough for even me to try. So I did.

Have you ever tried to make a video in a house full of kids? WAY HARDER THAN PLOPPING (SHUDDER).

Anyway, I'm not sure if this really counts as a hair plopping video or if it's a "4 minutes in the life of" video that happens to include me wearing a threadbare old t-shirt on my head like a poorly wrapped turban whilst I clean my house, but my videographer/editor worked super hard to help her mama (thanks Lizzy!) so let's do it.

Happy weekend!

  1. Hilarious!! I'm part of a wavy hair group on FB, and plopping is an ordinary item of conversation for us. LOL You are welcome to join! I'm gonna share your video there. :D

    2. What's the group? I'm super interested. I'm just growing new hair after my medication made a bunch fall out, and it seems wavier than before. I would like to try this, but I need more particulars.

  3. This was awesome! I just tried plopping last week, but wore it overnight and didn't add any product beforehand. I felt like the results were just ehh...I'll have to try it again your way!

  7. Lol. Seriously did it even do anything? I think I might be plopping my hair on the regular without even knowing it because I just leave a towel wrapped up on my hair for like 2 hours after getting out of the shower. Because hair is too much work.

    1. I'm plopping it right now and I'll take a better "after" pic and put it on IG. My camera-woman is a little afraid of close-up shots, it seems ;)

  9. Yes, it is legitimately one of the worst monikers ever. I go through phases where I do it every day, then not for months, then every now and then. I always put product in first. Recently I bought one of those turbie twists from the pharmacy that is made of microfiber. It does a really good job of drying my hair...almost too good and tends to frizz me out a bit. I might go back to the t-shirt after all though the turban is so much easier.
So do you think you'll stick with it? I'm going to check out your insta so i can get a closer look!
(Did you notice I never once used that awful word?)

  11. So great! Why can't they come up with a better name for it, though? Maybe I just have a potty brain (hard not to, when you're interminably potty training a 3 year old boy) but...yeah.
You and your daughter look like you have a fabulous relationship. I hope I can have that with mine when she's a teen in about 8 years!

  13. I don't understand plopping...lol. But the video was great. It made me cry. My daughter is leaving home for college next month, and we just laugh and have so much fun all the time..I have been putting some collage photos of her and her sibs together for her to take for college, so basically I have been having crying jags all afternoon..enjoy your big girl, she will be grown too soon (sob!).

  14. Haha! This is hilarious! I love the video! I hope that you liked your "plopalicious" hair! I've actually never heard of it before, but it seems handy; if anything, to keep wet hair out of the way while one goes about her day!

  16. I. Love. This. Video! Your Lizzy is so hired next time any video editing happens around here. I'm actually dumbfounded by her superb skills. And you! You are so friggen hilariously awesome! The "plopping" (shudder) ...or more like (giggle) looks good! What a fine way to start my day. (Watching your video, I mean. Not plopping.) Thank you. I'm seriously regretting not dropping by your place and soaking in your lovely life during my recent Michigan sojourn. Ah well. I blame the lack of transportation and satisfy myself that this video (and the other glimpses into your life that you so magnanimously share) will have to suffice. <3!

  18. hahaha hilarious. I tried plopping awhile back, it's pretty easy/effective once you get the hang of it! I liked being able to wrap it up and go about my business until it was dry-ish.
