What crazy people do (dining room before and after)

One thing that crazy people do, I think, is to go to hardware stores on the day of their son's first communion to buy 1x2 boards.  And then they come home with said boards and they measure them and cut them.  And then the thing that crazy people do is to nail the cut boards up as trim around the last unfinished doorway in their kitchen, now just a few hours before they need to be at the church, and then caulk the seams.  And now the crazy people are priming the new trim (twice) and painting trim and saying things like "why are you walking through this doorway??? Wet paint! Wet paint!" Because crazy people think that their kids should know that new trim would be going up on first communion day, ohmygoshpayattentionchildren.

Anyway.

Ta da!

Also, I fancied up the dining room a bit last week.  It's not done done DONE, but when is anything ever totally finished?  Always a work in progress, yes.

So, here was the photo of the dining room that we first saw on the real estate listing:

And here's Paul on move-in day, showing us his signature dance moves.  You can see the main wall of the dining room on the left side of the photo
Now how about we walk all the way into the dining room and share some sweet guitar playing to go along with the jigs?  No prob, Bob.
Then everything was normalish until we had to shove our entire kitchen into the dining room during the remodel, and the dining room got so, so painfully terrible, as you can see here....
Yay.  That was good timez.

But now we are enjoying a dining room that matches the kitchen that matches the laundry room and I'm feeling so "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, this is so dang pleasant you guys!" up in here.

in case you were wondering what I do with the flowers when we're actually using the table...

Still to do: more on the walls; do floors (along with kitchen floors en el futuro).  But so far, so good, y'all.  So, so good.

And now it's almost midnight and tomorrow we have co-op, but my feet really need a shower seeing as I was gardening in flip flops.  So here I go because that is just what crazy people do I think.

  2. Not to belittle all the work you've done and improvements you've made ... but for me a great improvement was made when the last owners took the scale with them!

  3. It's a good kind of crazy. And totally something I would do. I've been know to have my husband completely demolish a room without any warning whatsoever. :-)

  4. Where did you get those curtains, if you don't mind me asking? I love them and might have to steal them. The previous owners of this house have left boring, solid colour panels and I really want to change it up now.

  6. Another wonderfully completed project, even if it was via crazy. That kind of sounds like how I operate when I get in 'I'm getting this done right now never mind the other billion things that really demand my attention' mode. The dining room looks lovely and perfect!

    1. Sometimes you gotta strike while the iron is hot, know what I'm sayin'? If the van is empty and the husband willing...

  8. Everything looks great! And I'm thinking I totally need a scale in my dining room - it might solve some of my overeating issues. The old owners of your home might be on to something!

  12. I echo Nicole's query on the plates! I want to do them like all over my house. My only problem is that our house is muy old (think 1920s) and I have to use the 3M hangers to put anything up. Suggestions?

    1. In the post about the plates, as yet unwritten, I'll be sure to talk about hanging stuff on tricky walls. I'm feeling your pain there, too!

  14. Awww, that looks awesome! It's fun watching you make the house into a cohesive home. How many bedrooms did you say you had? (I'm trying to figure out how many months of entertaining posts we're in for.)

Going back two posts, I can't figure out what you meant when you were talking about your flooring conundrum. You were going to do something to the ceiling to make it parallel to the uneven floor?

You were talking about doing laminate, but we've had one bad experience after another with laminate. If you really can't do hardwood, maybe cork or just get a great vinyl floor? I know numerous people who rue the day they were talked into doing anything higher-maintenance than vinyl. And some of the products look pretty great. http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/products/luxury-vinyl.

Laminate looks like wood floor's ugly cousin to begin with, and then someone drops a glass of water or something heavy.... Maybe there is some amazing line out there that could endure six kids and a dog, but I've lived with about seven different laminate floors, all disastrous. If you *do* find the miraculously resiliant laminate, I'm sure we all look forward to knowing about it. My landlord has to replace the laminate in the kitchen because the fridge leaked, destroying the floor.

    1. The vinyl plank is what I think we're leaning towards! Before everyone's comments, I didn't even realize there was a difference between vinyl and laminate, but now laminate is totally OUT. Kicked to the curb.

The floor thing- the kitchen floor is level now, but in order to make it level, we had to bring up portions of it almost two inches. Anyway, we don't want to drop a thick hardwood floor on top of that or our ceilings will feel super duper low. Lame!

    2. That sounds great. I think the vinyl floors that have a nice pattern/color are really pretty timeless. Also, if you keep a box of extra pieces, you can remove damaged pieces and replace them yourself, which is pretty sweet.

So glad you are not going the route of the laminate!

Btw, if you ever want to tile a basement or something, my mom did that wood-looking tile, and despite my hollering about how awful it was going to be, it actually looks fantastic. Do you guys have a basement?

  15. Ohhh I love a good plate wall!! I have been contemplating doing something like that in our kitchen. Did you look for them at thrift stores?
