"Please sir, I want some more" homemade toothpaste recipe

When I get pregnant, I cannot STAND using regular toothpaste.  It really makes me gag.  Then my eldest daughter did some reading about SLS (sodium laurel sulfate), discovered that it is probably quite not good for us, and we decided to give some all natural toothpaste a try.  But before I took the plunge and bought all the ingredients, I ordered this natural toothpaste off of Etsy so we could see if we even liked it.

And we did.

So it was time to make some ourselves, because ain't nobody got the money to spend $8.50 for 4 oz toothpaste, okay?

After scouring the internet for a recipe to follow exactly, though, we decided to just create our own because we be cray like that.  And then one of my friends asked me to send her a link to the toothpaste we made, so I'm creating a link just for her and you get to see it too.  Bonus!

Without further ado:

"Please sir, I want some more" homemade toothpaste recipe

Makes about 1 cup

~Ever since seeing Oliver! for the first time last weekend, every word spoken in this house has had something to do with that dang lovely show.  And so the toothpaste recipe we created was named as such.  I'm sure it will fit incredibly well on labels and business cards and t-shirts and all that other promotional material that... people always buy when they really love a toothpaste?  Don't ask me.  I just live here.~

1/2 cup coconut oil
5 Tbsp baking soda
3 Tbsp+1tsp xylitol
4 capsules powdered magnesium supplement, broken open, capsule portion discarded (optional)
Peppermint essential oil, or any other flavoring you like, to taste (we ended up using about 10-12 drops)

Melt the coconut to a mixable consistency.  It has a low melting point so be careful!

Add all other ingredients.  Take a little taste.  Adjust as needed.  Pour into some sort of container with a lid (we used two small glass jars).  Voila!

We only used the optional magnesium powder because we happened to have it in the house and several recipes mentioned using calcium/magnesium powder.  But several didn't.  So basically we just made that part up.  Super scientific.

Happy orange juice drinking!

  1. Interesting...What are your thoughts on the absence of the fluoride? Is it in your water where you live or do your kids take fluoride treatments? That's kind of my concern--we don't have fluoridated water.

  2. Exactly what I was thinking. I grew up in town and never thought about the fact our water was fluorided. My first daughter was born when we lived in the country and I never gave it a thought until she was about 4 or 5 and I took her to the dentist. He asked if we were using fluoride drops since we had well water . . . .

    1. We don't have fluoride in the water in our area in northern NJ--and we definitely live in town. I'm a peds nurse and we being prescribing fluoride for kids at 3 years of age.

    2. I grew up in a city with fluoridated water, and my teeth were terrible, despite decent hygienic practices. AND we ate crazy healthy.

  3. Hm. Because I live in "crunchy California" I've heard of this stuff (xylitol). Not to be gross but it can cause cramping, gaseous emissions of a high (read orange threat) level and other wonderful intestinal fun. People use it as a laxative. Linked to being poisonous for dogs.

Just a word of caution because we care and we care about the little baby too! I can't have even a drop of chamomile when I'm pregnant - gives me cramps immediately. So we all have different tolerance levels for things.
Keep up the good work and God Bless!

    1. Some recipes I saw suggested stevia, would that be better?

    2. Xylitol is not supposed to cause cramping/gas unless you're eating it (think cookies?). Also it's super-good for teeth.

    3. I've used xylitol when we were trying an allergy-elimination diet (we cut out sugar, wheat, corn, eggs, dairy, peanuts and soy) and had to attempt a birthday cake for my husband. It didn't cause any trouble for any of us, but I have heard that large amounts of it can cause diarrhea. And I have to agree with Ella - everyone's going to have a different tolerance level, especially during pregnancy. But at the same time, you're not meant to swallow toothpaste, right?
Regarding fluoride, there's some scary stuff about that substance too - I grew up with well water, and my mother declined fluoride drops for me, and I have wonderful teeth. Too much fluoride can even cause weird spots on your teeth. I've tried natural toothpastes in the past in a direct attempt to avoid fluoride (and SLS).

  4. I'm totes making it. My husband might go blind from excessive eye rolling, but that never stopped me before. Just fyi, omit the calcium and the xylitol and you got yerself some fancy underarm deoderant that I promise works super well.

  6. When we were kids, my crunchy-before-it-was-cool mom would have us use straight baking soda when we were out of toothpaste.

We ditched fluoride years ago. There is evidence that it is very dangerous, especially to young kids. Hence the do-not-swallow directive. A holistic dentist we used to see said that it does in fact make teeth stronger, but only in the outside, which can then mask cavities until they are more serious. At any rate, the history of flouride makes interesting reading.

We've been fans of Xylitol for awhile but have since seen some negative stuff chime our about it. I'm kind of on the fence right now. But I bet the toothpaste would be good without it too.

Thanks, D. Gonna give it a try.

    1. Sanks, Micaela! I was going to wade into the whole "fluoride isn't without risks" waters but don't have to now.

Also, who would have thought that an innocent post about *toothpaste* would elicit such strong opinions?

  7. We make homemade toothpaste, too, but instead of xylitol, we use stevia powder and a little vegetable glycerin, which is also a bit sweet and makes the paste a bit creamier. We intentionally avoid fluoride, and haven't noticed any negative results.

I asked our dentist a while back what he thought of baking soda toothpastes (without telling him that we were making our own) and he paused for a second before saying, "Most people brush too hard. Just brush gently, no matter what kind of toothpaste you use, and you'll be fine."

  8. I just made the Wellness Mama recipe a few weeks ago and it's very similar to this! Except I added the bentonite clay which sort of makes it taste like dirt. We stay far away from fluoride as well. We even filter it OUT of our tap water because of our concerns. I think the calcium is important if you're hoping for the toothpaste to be "remineralizing"...Maybe? I'm hoping this will help fix the husband's teeth because he has some bad stuff going on. Worth a shot before we shell out the crazy amounts to fix it the conventional way, right?
