7 Quick Takes- Fie on you all! And mushrooms

(1)
Fie on you.  All of you!  Well, maybe not all of you.  But fie on you and you and you and you and anyone else who decided to tell me that I should watch Downton Abbey.

(2)
You guys: 3 o'clock in the morning.  Can we just take a moment to process what that means in non-college kid partying speak?  I was up until 3 a.m. watching Downton Abbey streaming on Netflix.

(3)
And it was so good.  So gooooooood!  Not capital G good. (honestly I really can't find any deep philosophical Goodness in it...yet?), but since I'm trying to be less like a 5 year old in my judgement of things I'm allowing myself to appreciate all the freaking TALENT that it takes to put a show like that together.  And the characters are so the-opposite-of-flat.  Usually I like this one and I loathe that one and can tell right away who the "good guys" and the "bad guys" are.  But not this time!

I seriously can't wait to watch the next episode.

(4)
This is how the boy pretends to sleep.  Super convincing, I know.

(5)
Yesterday, Paul talking to Katie: "I like it when you do chores because you throw stuff at Lizzy."

Yep.  Pretty saintly bid'ness goin' on up in here.

(6)
Holy cow.  Did you see that we have morels this year?????
We probably had them last year too but we were still total Michigan noobs and barely had a functioning electrical system, so mushroom hunting wasn't really high on our priority list, ya know?

We sauteed some in butter with salt and ate them by themselves, we battered some and fried them, and then we put some of the sauteed ones onto burgers.  And I'm still passed out from the total awesomeness so had to hire a ghost writer to tell you all this.  How's she doing?  You know, the ghost writer?

(7)
And finally, get your back-pattin' hands ready because I finally managed to post something new at Catholic Exchange!  Wanna know how I'm trying not to be such a crappy wife?  It's short, I promise...

Happy weekend, friends!

    2. dude there is Goodness, you just wait and see. Natural law. Cause and effect. Moral reality vs. relativism. You will seeeeeeeeee...

p.s. the exec producer is a good Catholic, so i've heard. And season 3 is promising to rock an 'explicitly Catholic storyline.'

      amen

  2. Ha! I love how Paul 'pretends' to sleep!
We had morels at our house this week and I couldn't get past the fact they looked like the animal brains I dissected in my college anatomy class. I took one bite, and I think they would be really good if they didn't look like brains ;)
I have never heard of that show...might have to check it out.
    Happy Friday :)

  3. Are you still in Season 1??? Season 2 turns it all around and makes you think even differently about the characters! Gah! I love it! I am seriously smoked that we won't see Season 3 until Sept of 2013!

  4. Downton Abbey just blows Mad Men out of the park. I might have to do some kind of 1 to 1 comparison of the first seasons just to make sure but I have not enjoyed a show so much as I enjoyed Downton Abbey. So glad you finally broke down and sacrificed a night of full sleep for it. After grueling college all-nighters, we deserve some entertaining all-nighters, no?!

  5. Oh man. Downton Abbey. I may have watched the 1st season more than three times...so many good characters. "What's a weekend?"

    1. I had to cover my mouth not to laugh out loud at that, Haley! So good.

But I'm only through episode 3, so no spoilers :)

  6. I'm at a point where I'd even accept pretend sleep. But no, he's not very convincing. By the way, I'm Team Paul. I feel bad for that kid. You need to get him a penguin.

  7. Ok been reading your blog for a few months now but this has finally driven me to comment: What are you doing?? You should have saved Downton for 3 am nursing sessions!! That's our household's current MO. Finished season one and now have to order dang season two on Dvd.
But seriously, love you blog, love the goats. Best from a fellow UD grad.

    1. I know! I'm a fool. A fool, I tell you! Also hoping that by the time I finish season 1, season 2 will be on Netflix. Is that too much to ask, ye gods of viewing stuff?????

    3. Oh, another Brit drama we watched a few weeks ago at odd hours was Sherlock (modern take on the obvious there). Hoping for another season of that too.

      Thanks for the tip, Jenny!

    4. Sherlock starts next week! My top four favorite shows: Mad Men, Sherlock, Breaking Bad, and Downton Abbey.

  8. Oh, I thought you were up until 3AM because you were fascinated by Growing Up in Faith... ;-)

  9. You finally watched it!! There's just so much going on, the characters will get more complex... I can't believe we'll have to wait so long til Season 3!

  10. Oh I love Dowtown Abbey too. So does my husband (but he wouldn't want me to admit that for him, but heck if he is gonna read this LOL) I too had way to many late nights...its like... just one more, just one more... Recently started watching Mad Men. Kinda like it too.

    1. Mad Men took me a few episodes, but then I was HOOKED!! Just stick it out until the middle of season one, it is worth it!!

  11. DA is amazing. Ah-mazing. I watched the WHOLE thing in one day on Netflix. Yes, I have more important things to do but SO WHAT! Luckily my mom and dad are also obsessed so they pre-ordered season 2 on dvd and I got to watch it almost as soon as it was released. Cannot WAIT for season 3.. boo for the long wait! And Mad Men is another Netflix FAVORITE! Took me a few episodes of that one to get into it but once I did oh Lawdy. My only excuse for the obscene amount of NetFlix I watched the last few months was it was winter and I had no impulse to do anything other than lay on the couch.

  12. I HATED Dowton Abbey for the first three episodes. And then I completely surrendered to the Edwardian crack.

  13. MUSHROOMS! My mouth is watering right now. We missed the morels in here this year, I think. I am so jealous. That was one of my favorite, once-a-year meals as a kid, sautéed morels over deer steak.

  14. I blazed through both seasons of Downton Abbey AND the Christmas Special AND THE behind-the-scenes episode! Cannot wait for the new season to be out - bye bye Internet!

    Have a good weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  15. So. jealous. of. mushrooms. I will only continue to read your blog if you ship them all to me right now. NOW!

Think my husband will let us sign up for Netflix just so I can watch it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I order the entire season 1 and 2 so I can watch it over and over..... I'm so addicted. You know what? I hear Shirley McClain has signed on for the next season. Hopefully she'll be a bad person and kill Thomas...I HATE him, he's so mean! Sorry it just am SO into that show!

  17. I finally got an explanation of what Downtown Abbey is about the other day and now I totally want to watch it. But I don't think I can stay up until 3 am...

    ReplyDelete
  18. So what you're staying is your girls will never be allowed to read the Rick Riordan book I sent...

  19. Downton Abbey is way too addictive! I can't wait til Netflix has the second season...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I was so, so bummed when I finished the first season on Netflix and realized the second season wasn't on there. It's super rare for me to find a show I like enough to actually follow (and when I do, I'm usually embarrassed by their lack of quality) so this one is a winner all the way around!

  21. This is the first time I have seen your blog. and I am sure that it is Divine Providence that the first time I see it you are talking about your fresh morels. What would it take for you to invite me to dinner? I am in Md. and I am currently laid up with a broken leg which is why I am spending more time on the internet and reading blogs I have never read before, so at this point I couldn't make my wonderful homemade bread (I start by grinding the grain in my kitchen), but for fresh morels I would start planning for next year.

  22. Dude. Amen on the Downton Abbey thing. I was a sleep-deprived zombie on Christmas because we stayed up so late "wrapping presents" and just "happened" to have Downton Abbey on at the same time. It is amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Now I have to RedBox this show, thanks a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Now you too are sucked into Downton Abbey (insert any particular evil laugh here). It's so addictive, I eagerly await next season. And I'm gonna trust you on those mushrooms...because I'm sure they were delicious, but they look suuuuuuuper creepy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am deliberately saving Downton Abbey for this summer, when school is over, because I KNOW I'll be completely sucked into it!

Also, those mushrooms look like brains. Mmmmmmm, braaaiiiiins!

  26. I am so mad at the facebook people who influenced my husband to start us on Downton Abbey. I keep telling him, "I'm not sure if I am watching this anymore." And then, midnight, 12:30, 1. I sent him a text one morning after, "I am barking at everyone and totally exhausted, no more Lords and Ladies at midnight!" It is really good though. Like a "Pride and Prejudice" soap opera. ;)
