Sometimes God whispers. Be listening.

"How did you know daddy was the one you should marry?" she asked. And because she was only five years old, I couldn't launch into my standard fare of snarky irreverence all about how he had a nice small noggin, which would be to my advantage should we be blessed with children (which we were. And it was, by the way) or how he was the first guy who refused to let me boss him around and insisted that I drop the passive/aggressive song and dance (which he was.  And I did, by the way).  I needed something simple she could wrap her sweet brain around and I needed it to be true.  "One day, God whispered it to me, and I heard Him with my heart."

gratitude for a holy husband

Happy, happy birthday to my amazing husband.  My fantastic, wonderful husband who knows seven languages and how to make the perfect pizza dough.  Who walked with me on my tumultuous journey to Jesus.  Who knew I was a better person than I allowed myself to be and worked so hard to get me to admit it.  Who has stuck by me even though this hasn't always been easy or fun (although a lot of times it is!).  Who is asleep on the floor now, right over there, surrounded by dogs, wearing a sweatshirt I bought at a thrift store in 1996.  Because he doesn't care about being the center of attention or material things.  He cares about a happy family.  So on his birthday he patched a flat tire, went grocery shopping, and rotated the compost.  He dug up sod, did the dishes, and watched King of the Hill with his kids.  And he puts up with me, and this, and all that stuff, and those things too.  Your first 32 years have been pretty incredible, Tommy.  Thank you for sharing the last 12 of them with me.

  6. I found your blog via One Mixed Bag and just have to say I'm glad I did. This post is a sweet tribute to your husband.

I especially love your answer to your 5-year-old. You are right, absolutely right, about how you knew who you should marry.

  7. This is the cutest thing ever. I sure hope someone asks me how I knew my Tom was the one, just so that I can use your answer!

  8. How awesome to have stumbled across this! Did you know that when I first discovered your blog like, one or two months ago, I went back and read EVERY, SINGLE, ONE of your posts? I did, I read them in chronological order, because they told such a unique, happy story and because I was enthralled.

The funny thing is, I don't know how, but I missed this one! And then tonight when I was reading today's post, there was the photo icon at the bottom leading to this post and I didn't recognize it... so I clicked on it, and here I am.

...That was the long way of going about telling you I'm really glad I found this because it is one of the sweetest, most inspired things I've ever read. :)
