Ghetto Not-Fabulous

Once upon a time I had this turtleneck from Land's End.

I am in love with the soft fabric and the color is a little bit fabulous.
But that doesn't change the fact that it's a plain old turtleneck and I am not one of the hosts of that radio show with the two ladies from Minnesota.  I don't have time to link you to that hilarity, but I totally would if I did.

So then I remembered that someone had done fixed some turtlenecks and it was Ana.  She fabbed one up here and here and I was just sure I could do the same.

Now if I only showed you this:
...you might think I had been successful.

Friends, trust me when I say again that everything I do is ghetto.  I will now reveal the dirty details of my incorrect sewing machine tension.  Brace yourselves.

uno....

dos.....

tres!!!!

Oh yeah, that's some quality craftsmanship right there, y'all.  Probably I should start holding my skype tutorials soon.  Maybe a private collection, too.

  1. If you keep people at arms length, it looks gorgeous!

  2. I love that you kept going anyways! Sewing isn't hard, I swear, you learn something from everything you make!

  3. Wrap a classy, pretty scarf around your neck and no one will be the wiser. Works for me anyway.

  4. Your sewing is just like mine...glad I'm not the only ghetto sewer out there.

  5. Now just sew yourself a huge loopy spring cowl from some old silky fabric at goodwill and no one will be able to tell the difference.

  6. It looks like either a tension problem or a bobbin problem. See how in Uno, the inside looks better than the outside? Try re-threading the bobbin, messing with tension, or sewing everything right side up, as opposed to wrong side up. It's practically J Crew!

  7. Well, I don't understand changing a perfectly good turtleneck. If I don't have my turtlenecks from October to April, I die. The cold on my neck KILLS ME.

But, for future reference when you are needlessly altering turtlenecks and that loopy stuff happens, re-thread your machine. It's probably not tension, it's probably that you were threading wrong, including maybe the bobbin. Next, change thread and needle. Last, blow out the machine's innards and oil according to directions. Make sure you are actually using oil and not crazy glue like some nitwits.

You look lovely at that distance, I must say, although your neck looks COLD!! :)

  8. Or, you could tell everyone that crazy seams are the new style. Because if you told everyone that, I could be proud of my own fashionable sewing style.

  9. That's what mine looks like when the upper thread is not quite right. I just rethread it over and over until it starts acting like a sane sewing machine again.

  10. I don't know the first thing about sewing machine tension, so please make me feel better and tell me you're referencing the Shvetty Balls ladies? From the SNL skit? If not, Imma need that link!

  11. It looks like Frankenstein's neck :) That is so awesome. I tried making t-shirt bags today and managed to make them look sloppy as all get out. I was using these beautifully done bags as templates and still couldn't make mine look like anything other than a ratty old tshirt!

  12. Hey, if you wear a white collared shirt underneath no one would be the wiser!! I freakin hate when my sewing machine pulls that crap- it's not your fault!! Mad props for taking time to craft.

  13. I agree with Rachael. Start a trend that helps us poor seamstresses everywhere!

  14. Sew a pretty ribbon over the seam. Problem solved. :)

  15. Okay, I sew, and sometimes my machine just acts weird. What...ever!

Don't bother re-sewing (I mean, unless you want to.) It may stretch out the fabric and not look, really, any nicer. Myself, I would probably have used bias tape. That's me, though. I like this idea, though.

I say, wear a scarf! Summer, winter, who cares? Big ole, pouffy scarf and you'll look hip. Honestly, no one will know. They probably wouldn't know if you just cut the neck and *didn't* sew it At All!

  16. I find that wabi-sabi hand-embroidery look about the neckline quite anthro.

  17. Please. I like your ghettofabulousness.
I love the whole idea of "It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful". And besides, the shirt looks sweet. I kinda like the way you sewed it all crazy and stuff.
It's great when people do stuff like this and post it. Gives courage to lots of other people who might not have tried otherwise.

  20. From this girl who doesn't own a sewing maching, you get only high-fives and props! I'm always impressed by any level of sewing and fixing. I can do buttons and minor hand repairs, but that's about it. I used to know how to sew once upon a time, but it's been so long......

  21. My sewing machine doesn't work right on knits. I don't know why, but it neve rhas. I am too lazy to find out why, ha ah.

  22. Sewing machine tension can break a project for me. I am forever trying to keep my stitches hidden on knits! Put a scarf on it and no one is the wiser. I like it.

  25. I think I've got a couple of store-bought shirts with worse tention issues than that -- don't stress over it!
