There once was a pair of boots.

There once was a pair of boots that belonged to a girl who used to wear heels.

There once was a pair of boots that belonged to a girl who used to wear heels but who now wears boots and has the pleasure of early morning walks through the forest.

Early morning walks through a misty forest to see the leaves budding on her crabapple tree.

To discover mysterious flowers along her barn, just on the verge of blooming.

To find not-so mysterious yellow crocuses, planted lovingly in her first-ever bed of flowers, heralding the arrival of spring.

There once was a pair of boots that belonged to a girl who used to wear heels but who now wears boots and who didn't know that the lush green leaves of her maple tree would start out as delicate red flowers.

Whose reverie would be cut short by the discovery that her stupid idiotic precious dogs....

...had torn a section of lattice off the front gate in their excitement about....whatever it is that stupid idiotic precious dogs get so frappin' excited about.

Which is approximately when the boots and their girl abandoned the girl's husband and their stupid idiotic precious dogs and went to the feed store (for animals).

And the feed store (for people).

There once was a pair of boots that belonged to a girl who used to wear heels but who now wears boots and wore them to carry in the groceries.

And to clean out the chicks' brooder.
And to check on her garden in the rain.

There once was a girl who thought she would never wear boots and she would always want to wear heels.  She was wrong.

  1. I LOVE THIS STORY! Okay, I am usually anti-caps, but this post needed caps for sure! I am a former city-girl turned ranch Momma myself, so I can 100% relate to this post which you worded so eloquently.

I wear my rain boots everywhere on the ranch and sometimes off the ranch as well. Except when we are hiking, that's when the Teva's have to go back on. & your peeps are so cute!! We have new hatchlings due next week, they are half prairie chicken/half Aruacana. (My MIL has wild prairie chickens that decided to join her flock!!) I will be sure to get pictures soon, peeps are so fun.

  4. I love this post! While I love (LOVE) my heels, lately I've been coveting a sensible pair of wellies. Who knew us heel lovers would stoop to this! Love those sweet little chicks!

  5. Love it!! There are so many cute boots you can get too! I love my green ones I picked up at the grange a few years ago. They're a little big but I can wear super thick socks to keep my toes warm. Your crocuses are beautiful!

  6. I cannot tell you how much I love this! You totally rock. And the boots are great. I actually think seeing a lady in rubber boots is so chic and I always wonder the story behind the boots.

  9. Oooh, are you going to write another footwear story next week? I hope so!

My boots have polka dots. Perhaps it will rain so I can wear them. Kind of hope so...

  10. You guys are the nicey-nicest!

@Daenel- thank you for the meme. I love the challenge of trying to create something new that fits in with the theme of the blog. Staying on "topic" (as I've mentioned before) is getting harder and harder!

@m3lb- Wow, that is so sweet of you to say! You know, you just never know which ones are gonna be hits, do ya? "Writing" this one was fun. It was a fun day (all of that was literally today, all before 3:49 pm).

@Katie- I love how you tweeted me about the flowers, and then I went on that walk, and then you READ MY BLOG ABOUT THE WALK! It's just so...synergistic or something :)

  11. I agree with Tex, this could be a storybook. It makes me want a cool pair of boots. It just goes to show that what we want and what our soul needs are two different things.

  14. Boots seem much more practical than heels.

A wonderful storybook style post. You have the makings of a children's book, my dear.

  18. Dweej,
I'm going to echo the other commenters and say, "What a great post!" I loved, loved, loved it! The captures go perfectly with the story and the words resonated with me. Not because I live on a farm but because once upon a time I too thought I'd wear nothing but heels. Nowadays, I spend my time in house slippers and Chucks. Ever tried walking on cobblestones in heels? :)

  20. Nuh, uh! You are!! (talented. I'm responding to your comment at my post.)

How is it that I missed this one back there in April? I'm a horrible blog friend. I love the point of view in the photos. I went on a journey with you to the frappin' store!

  21. No way, girl. I have been in an unfunkable funk the last few days. I couldn't even manage to write a new post for this link-up (obviously!). Sigh.

    This too shall pass :)

  23. I need to borrow your boots; mine don't take me on magical journeys like yours do.

I'll trade you my Gladiator sandals.

    Think about it...

  24. This is my first visit. You totally had me with your blog header. Then the post...I was a goner! This was so much fun. The verse bouncing along like a favorite children's story. The thought of you taking pictures of your feet as you were bopping along through your errands!
I had time to read one post before bed. What an absolute treat that it was yours!
