Ah, finally time to sit down and...
Doh! The chickens! So just hold on one sec while I run out and open the coop and check on those silly birds...
Well I'm back and guess what? They're all fine. And the garden looks pretty stinkin' amazing too. I'd take a picture and show you, only, you know.....I can't!
Okay, time for the real stuff.
Yesterday, I tagged along with a sweet friend to the annual plant auction at her garden club. If you're imagining a bunch of old ladies arguing about the official latin names for certain strains of a particular variety of flower, then...hey, were you spying on us? But see, the awesome thing about this place is that even at "formal" garden club meetings, someone may or may not have made the punch out of WINE. At 9 a.m. Leading me to hypothetically say "Hey, I thought the rapture was on Saturday. How is it that I'm in heaven now??? "
My favorite part was when, halfway through the business portion of the meeting, while the president was talking, the secretary (who happens to also go to our parish. Holy cow, she is sweet and hilarious) hollers "Hey, what's in this drink??? I'm losing interest in you people really fast!". Have you ever heard my honkey-donkey laugh? Well those ladies heard it yesterday, I can promise you that.
Clearly the morning alcohol was a ploy to get us all to spend more money at the auction. Smart, funny old ladies. I wanna be just like them when I grow up.
Back to the plants. To beautify the huge expanse of fence along our front yard, I snagged three pots of Sweet Autumn Clematis (clematis paniculata). Normally $20 each, I paid $7. Not quite FREE, but close! Please say a little prayer that they one day look like this:

which include Autumn Joy (sedum):

Hope you guys have a fantastic weekend planned. Think of me and my poor unsuspecting plants while you're out and about 'cause we're gonna need some Universe-ish growing mojo up in this piece!
p.s. The winner of the Unrepeatables contest has been announced! Check it out here.
Sounds fantabulous! Can't wait for them to bloom and for you to take pictures!
ReplyDeleteUm, if you're going to keep throwing Latin around, I wont' be able to follow you. I'm unolingual.
ReplyDelete"Hey, I thought the rapture was on Saturday. How is it that I'm in heaven now????" Hahahahahaha! Touche! I guess I've been taken because I'm not currently burning in hell at the moment. Or does the rapture happen at a certain time today. Do I need to watch my back at, say, 4:10 this afternoon? And is that Eastern or Central time?
ReplyDeleteGood luck with those plants. Every day I say a little prayer that today won't be the day I kill my seedlings. So far so good.
Oh, what is better than wine and plants? Sounds like a good day. I will keep everything crossed that your new little plants grow damn it!
ReplyDeleteBernie...that's what I forgot to do yesterday. I need to run out there and yell "grow dammit" at them!
ReplyDeleteAww, I hope you get your camera fixed or a new one, whichever the broken one warrants. Awesome stuff though! I wish I had a yard so I could plant some plants. :/ I do have a tomato plant that's not really growing and some herbs on my porch. Yay!
ReplyDeleteOw, you made my stomach cramp from laughing! I can think of some meetings I've been in that could have used some spiked punch to liven things up.
ReplyDeleteHey, I went to a plant sale a couple of weekends ago and no alcohol was served. I FEEL JIPPED! What fun...I love plants anyway and to combine with alcohol is like some magical...HEAVEN. You're right. I wish your plants a long and healthy life.
ReplyDeleteSeriously Dweej? Booze at a plant sale? Clearly I live in the wrong part of the country! How I wish and wish again, that I was in Michigan!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I love how all my bloggy friends are like: Plants Schmlants! Gimme the liquor!
ReplyDeleteAfter so many months of winter seriousness (all those layers put a damper on the fun, don't they?) we can't help but cut loose a little dramatically. This is a place of extremes, that's for sure. Luckily, I'm a girl of extremes, so it suits me just fine :D
Oh...I hope you get a working camera! I have to live varcariously through the green thumbs of others to enjoy flowers in bloom. I kill everything!
ReplyDeleteNew follower through the Crazed Fan Weekend Hop, nice to meet you.
Nikki
Hahaha! I kill plants too. Maybe drinking would help. Also, here's the link to Outnumbered, since it's not working right over at FTLOB.

Those pics are great. I hope that works out for you. I've killed every seedling, plant, flower, I've ever had. Except for the Irises I planted in the front yard. DH even ran them over with the lawn mower and destroyed the sprinkler system but the irises live on. My kinda plant.
ReplyDeleteI do a little better with children it seems.
You inspire me to try again ... maybe in a few years. ... When I can hire a gardner.
Great post! :D

Puh-lease! No way you can kill sedum. Stick it in its spot and watch it turn purdy! Plus...if a bunch of drunk ladies can make them grow, you know you're safe.
ReplyDeletePlants are fun! But I'm still giggling over the secretary's comment. Mostly because it sounds like something I would do....
ReplyDeleteI love plants and flowers but you can't tell by the multitude of dead ones that fill the interior and surround the exterior of my home. I'm just happy the kids have survived.
ReplyDeleteThink your good to go with the sedum, it's definitely a beginner gardener's friend. Marigold's too. Can't promise anything with the Evening Primrose though - it met an untimely demise in my yard - though it is my 'go to' for supplements when it comes to PMS. Seriously!!! But buy it from the drug store LOL - can't remember what part of the plant is good to use.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with gardening - I'm at a point where I'm downsizing - gave away about 30 bags of day lily's last year on Freecycle. Haven't even gotten my tomatoes in yet this year !
How did I miss this post? I bet your plants will do just fine :)I LOVE sedum. I need to get some at this place, stat. And marigolds are one of my old school favs. They are good companion plants to ward off bad things. Like deer. And maybe bugs. (don't quote me on that)
ReplyDeleteHonkey Donkey laugh!! I can just imagine! That was a funny story!
ReplyDeleteSomehow i missed this post and only saw it just now on comment love. Anyhoo, we just spent several days 'rebeautifying' our yard because my in-laws are here and they like to do that sort of thing. it will be sad when everything goes back to crap in a couple of months.
ReplyDeleteYou know, you're going to be busy when you get that new camera, what with recording the Mr. Bean dance and the Honkey Donkey laugh for all of us :)
Love Evening Primrose; mine are all getting ready to bloom.
ReplyDeleteAnd the damn deer are just waiting, back in our woods, ready to eat every last one.
Take plenty of pics, I'll just enjoy yours.
Visiting from comment love Sunday. Grandpa and I bought a lot of flowers this year, but did not score any deals like yours! Now I just have to plant them all....good luck with yours!
ReplyDeleteyour yard is going to look awesome! :) And that meeting, that is hilarious! Wine punch at 9am huh? :)
