They're Proud of Us

Viking paper dolls wait patiently near the printer.  The boy is coloring his alphabet sheets.  Little Cecilia munches on her cereal.  The house is quiet.  The bus goes by.  The girls are still asleep.

Everything just feels...right.
At night I read them a chapter from Anne of Green Gables.  During the day she reads The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and she reads The Witch of Blackbird Pond.  We've talked about the Danes (they giggled with glee when I used the wall map to show them Denmark and Norway and Sweden.  "Just like a real teacher!") and St. Gregory the Great and how China is smaller than the U.S. but has more than three times as many people.

Her eyes lit up when she figured out that multiplying something by a fraction makes it smaller instead of bigger.  They laughed as we all hopped up and down the number line.  It turns out that negative numbers aren't as confusing as they sound.

They're just so...happy.

And we found a snake track in the dirt and picked our pole beans and collected our eggs (5 a day, every day!) and discovered a bee hive in our maple tree.

I'm proud of them.  Proud of us.

And judging by this sign I found hanging on our fence advertising the reason for their absence to their former bus mates, I'm guessing they're proud of us too.

  2. I'm proud of you too, really. This year marks our first homeschooling; my oldest is in kindergarten. And it has been HARD. It's been a month and I've already decided to quit (and not quit) a dozen times. Your post today reminded me of the beautiful, sturdy reasons why we decided to homeschool, the reasons why we power through the difficult days when it just seems like it's not for us. You are AWESOME! Keep it up!

  3. Amazing! But I am a little sad you didn't point out Finland too, haha, just kidding. It is way up on the map. Even those Scandinavian maps ;) Love that ya'll are happy as could be! That is the way to learn.

  6. Thanks so much for that! It is a nice little bit of encouragement for those of us who are contemplating doing the same in the future... but fear like many that it will be difficult!

    Awesome!

  14. The happy just exudes from your words - and I want you to be my teacher, too. At the very least, if I ever have kids, can I send them to your Homeschooling Institute? You are such an inspiration!

  16. Lovely!

We caught grasshoppers in the backyard and looked them up on the internet - learning in the process that insects have three body parts and six legs :). I love the moments of spontaneous learning!

  18. Homeschooling has so many benefits. The most important lesson to learn is how to best advocate for your own children.

Good luck on your beautiful HI journey!

  19. Happy Homeschooling Institute is what I'd call it! So many parents delight at the few hours they get alone when their children are at school, and you? You delight in their presence and the opportunity to educate them yourself. You are an inspiration, Dweej.

  20. Very impressive!! I feel like I can't even lead my kids through a simple craft. You are my hero. Wait, or heroine? Geez, are there any openings in your school?

  22. You know you've made it when even the bees wanted to make a home in your backyard ;)

I can't believe those chickens are laying 5 eggs a day now! Eeek. I just hope our kids don't grow up THAT fast! LOL

So proud of all that you've accomplished so far. And I know that I'll be proud with whatever you decide to accomplish next. You're amazing, Dweej.

  30. That is so AWESOME. I really admire anyone that homeschools. I'm not going to say that I can't or won't but ... we'll see when the time comes.
