Why I've been such a crappy blogger

Right now I'm eating raw asparagus spears dipped in spicy Asian garlic sauce (like Sriracha but comes in a jar with a green lid.  Has pepper flakes in it).

Last week I went to an actual doctor's office for the first time in....over three years.

The week before that, I called my husband at work in a hysterical frenzy, sobbing into the phone.  He had to come home, I said.  He had to come home right now.
There was so much blood (sorry.  stay with me) that I was sure I'd be passing out aaaaaaaaaaany second.

This is why I've been such a craptastical blogger lately, my friends.

Should I start at the beginning?  Okey doke.  Will do.

Two months ago I took my kids to their dance class at our homeschool partnership building.  As I tried to eat the baby's snacks with one hand (she was 8 months old at the time), I had to use the other hand to hold my eyelids up.  Tired.  Tired.  So, very, very, very tired.

So despite not having got my cycles back yet and despite my baby still nursing many times a day and night and despite the fact that I was still able to brush my teeth with toothpaste instead of baking soda without barfing, I did what every woman who's been pregnant eight times does- I took a pregnancy test.

Two lines, baby!  Baby.  Literally baby.  A real new baby just for us!

After some quick math (women who've been pregnant eight times are very good at this particular kind of math) I realized these youngest two will be 17 months apart.  Still not as close as the 15 months of our first two, but close!

Then everything was fine.  I mean yes, cheese at 11 p.m., almonds all morning.  But nothing, nothing, NOTHING as horrible as the two-steps-from-death I felt with Mary.  Which of course, because three of those previous eight pregnancies ended in miscarriage, made me a little nervous.  I'm supposed to be sick!  I'm supposed to yacking every hour on the hour and unable to stand upright!  I'm supposed to wishing that someone would accidentally push me off a cliff just to put me and everyone else out of our collective misery!

And then two weeks ago, on a Wednesday, it happened.  After mild non-panic inducing spotting, I started bleeding.  A lot.  Tons.  Scary amounts.  Tommy came home from work.  He got me hydrated.  I took an iron supplement.  We waited.  It stopped.  Then again Friday evening.  Then again Saturday evening.  Forget "two pads in an hour." There was so much blood and so many clots I had to (slowly.  lethargically.) dig out the chux pads from last year's homebirth.

So much crying.  So much uncertainty.  And each morning I woke up to no more bleeding and a fresh bout of the same, mercifully gentle, pregnancy symptoms.  I needed to know what was going on (as you may have guessed, I am loathe to visit any medical professional.  Ever.  Maybe if you sawed off my arm or something....).  But I have no OB!  Well, had none.  And now it was the weekend.  With more tears.

A lengthy, story-filled call to my midwife on Monday was followed by a  lengthy, story-filled call to an OB's office that she recommended on Tuesday, which was followed by a call back with an appointment for an ultrasound the very next day, which was last Wednesday.

Oy, it is truly awful to get up on a table and wait to see whether or not your baby is still alive.  I mean, that probably goes without saying but I just can't not say it.  It is horrible.

Lights off.  Screen on.  Black blobs.  White haze.  And then a little leg.  A moving leg.  A tiny itty bitty leg that moved!  And then the whole baby came into focus, a little cramped by all those black blobs (I'll get to those in a second) but totally, totally, miraculously, still there and still alive.  Praise God!!!

So the deal is (hope y'all wanna know how a person can basically be hemorrhaging and not lose her baby, and besides the first answer of "God works miracles all the time, even when we don't think we deserve them", there's a medical answer too) that there are these "black blobs" which are really called "subchorionic hematomas."  Here is a piece written in medical speak, but basically there are pockets of blood and tissue that have formed between the amniotic sac at the uterine wall, with the most concerning ones being around, and potentially behind, the placenta.  If these pockets burst, there is mucho bleeding that has nothing actually do with the baby.  Yay!

The super worst case, totally rare, probably nothing we actually need to worry about, not-so-yay part is that they can in some instances (rare!) interfere with the functioning of the placenta and/or eventually lead to placental abruption.  Which is why we get to go back in next week for another ultrasound to see if the "blobs" have been reabsorbed by my body (best case scenario), if they've shrunk at all due to bleeding (there has already been more of that), or if they've grown (that would be lame).  And I am only telling you this yucko part because, well, prayers are always welcome and I can't really be authentic and junk if I leave it out.

But honestly, the worst case scenario is HIGHLY UNLIKELY.  Doctors, for good reason, just need to take the most conservative course of action, ya know?  What's most likely is that everything will be fine and on or around November 22 (which is a Friday, by the way.  Wink wink.), we will all get to meet Borobia Baby #6.

Because God is good and we live miracles every day.

Whew.  Was that long enough for ya?  Thanks for stickin' around.

  4. So many prayers! I've been there, and it's a scary road. May you keep feeling well and may the clot absorb soon!

  5. A friend of mine had a baby a month ago, after dealing with subchorionic haematoma (hereinafter referred to as s.h.) early in the pregnancy. She was put on bed rest for a while, but eventually it reabsorbed. Baby was a month early, as it happened, due to complete and utter water breakage, but he was strong and healthy and almost six pounds. The lessons I draw from this are:
    1) Hey! S.h.! I know what that is!
and 2) Healthy babies after s.h. happen in real life, not just in the wacky land of statistics.
    Hang in there!

    2. Well, in the spirit of encouraging you, I'll add in here that I've had it with both of our last two (we only have had three pregnancies, and have had it with two of them, but we also have all three babies, so I'm thankful for that like crazy!) and it was scary, especially with the last! With the first (second baby, this is), they were just there, hanging out, when they did the ultrasound stuff, they informed me I may have spotting, but I didn't.. with the second (well, third baby), I was informed of all this as well, but then around 12 weeks (JUST before the sigh-of-relief that comes with the second trimester starting!) I had some bleeding and crazy cramping and went through a really scary hospital visit that ended with news about like yours! Thankfully! I'm the type to not really notice the connection I have with the babies while they're in utero, although it's instantaneous when they arrive, but I didn't realize how traumatic it could be when this stuff happens... I even left my husband at home with the kids to go in to get checked out post-bleeding, and until the [completely jaded] doctor said something stupid and not-thought-through-at-all like "well, it's about 50-50 that you're not really pregnant anymore" while poking around in there, I had no idea just how attached I'd gotten over that short of a time to that new life!

Annnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyywayyyyyyyyy, this wasn't supposed to be about me as much as I made it, I just wanted to tell you that I'm glad you have good news, that we've had the same thing and completely healthy, giant (in a good sense), thriving babies as a result!

And we'll be praying for sure!

      Congratulaaaaaaaaaaaaaaationssssssss!!!

      Maria :]

  17. Congratulations!

And oh, my goodness, how scary. I had light bleeding with small clots at the beginning of this pregnancy and that was scary enough -- what you went through must have been terrifying!!! I'm hoping and praying your next appointment will show that all is well.

  18. Oh my goodness, congrats Dwija! That is really wonderful and I will say prayers that bestest of the best case scenario is what you receive news of next week. I hope you're feeling well and getting well-deserved rest.

  33. Just found your blog like... last week... but wanted to say congrats and ohmygosh I had this happen with my son last year!! I only had one clot/blob thingy, but yes, yes, yes it.is.so.scary. I remember rushing to the ER totally convinced this was "it" - we were losing my one and only baby. The stupid, horribly blob resolved itself, though, and he is a happy-go-lucky 8 month old now. :)

  59. Congratulations!!! So happy for you. I'll be sending many prayers your way. I recently read "My Sisters, the Saints" by Colleen Carroll Campbell, and I believe she had the same condition while she was pregnant with tiwns - and it was miraculously healed before the delivery! Her book is a worth while read, not just for the incredible tale of her pregnancy! You should check it out - in your free time (hehe) love, Theresa

  67. CONGRATUFREAKINLATIONS!!

Dwija, you had me so scared reading that post - shame on you - but I'm so so happy the baby is ok! My sister-in-law had that bleeding and eventually they "shrunk" and went away. My friend and co-worker had it and went on bedrest and the baby was born perfectly healthy. Praying the same thing happens to you, but please please take it easy!

You are actually an excellent blogger, that totally random picture at the bottom made me laugh and release some of the tension from this roller coaster post, your intent I imagine ~ thank you.

  73. Congratulations! I, too, had a subchorionic hematoma with my second child (but not my third). It was incredibly scary- so much so that I left my friend's house and drove to the hospital to get checked out and did not even take my daughter with me. That much blood just doesn't seem right when you're pregnant. I delivered a very healthy, very active, very *everything* baby boy right on time several months later and all was well. I was put on basically bed rest for a few weeks to help everything reabsorb and to avoid placental abruption, which was hard, but I could definitely see the relationship between my activity level and amount of bleeding, so I'd try for as much feet-up time as possible. I'll pray for you a little baby Borobia!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Congratulations! I so glad baby is okay! When I was 16 weeks pregnant with this one the Dr for some reason couldn't find a heartbeat for a reaaalllly loooonnnng time. She gave the 'hmmmm' and had the furrowed brow and everything. She found it eventually and everything is fine but that was truly the longest 90 seconds of my entire life. I cannot imagine waiting through the weekend with symptoms like those but the joy you must have felt seeing that baby must have been so incredible. What a happy day! Praying that everything continues to go well.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yay! I'm so happy for you guys! I almost didn't keep reading after "There was so much blood" because I'm ten weeks pregnant and I thought you had had a miscarriage and I just couldn't handle it. I'm so glad I kept reading. I hope you keep getting better and have a happy and healthy pregnancy and a happy and healthy baby.

  81. My husband woke up this morning to find me grinning away at my smartphone.
    "What's up?" he sleepily inquired.
    "Dwija's pregnant!!" I squealed.
    "Which Dwija?" he mummbled.
"What are you talking about, which Dwija - Dwija Borobia, obviously!" I turned to look at him, he's grinning like he just told the world's best joke ever. I realized he was kidding.

You are a household name, Dwija.

  82. Awesome news! I will pray that your body resorbs those suckers, if only for the peace of mind that it will bring you. Another thing to boost your peace of mind? My SIL had the same problem during her 2nd pregnancy. They never really resorbed but they caused zero problems (besides, you know, all the bleeding) for the baby, who is now a delicious almost 2 year old.

And I have confidence that you will rock the 17 month age gap. Two of mine are 17 months apart and it's all good. Now the 2 who are 13 months apart was a dicey situation for all involved, but you're golden.

    Prayers!

  110. Congrats, Dwija! I had subchorionic hematomas with kids 6 and 7. All was fine. So glad your babe is hanging in there!

  114. What wonderful news! Congratulations! My sister had two pregnancies just like this (boo) but both resulted in beautiful, healthy, ever-so-slightly premature baby girls (yay!).

  118. Congratulations!! So happy for you and hope everything goes smoothly from here on...I can't imagine how anxious and terrified I would have been in your shoes! I also feel like I can now acknowledge that I already sort of have baby fever again, with my first baby closing in on 9 months...;)

  120. Oh, oh, oh, how wonderful!!!! I hate to think of you all upset and that wretched feeling in the pit of the stomach...but the baby's good!

  121. Oh my, oh my, why am I just finally getting to this congrats party late??!! Holy freak-out Batman! I was freaking knowing that baby + bleeding (massive bleeding) hardly ever = baby fine. And then I remembered God's miracles I received and baby blessings and abundant grace. I'll be praying for you and baby and dear, oh dear, God bless you Dwija! After my Irish twins (just under 1 year apart) I still freak out just a bit even contemplating another baby and what that age difference would be. Each month gets a little bit easier, especially now that it would mean my youngest would reach the age of TWO before POSSIBLY another one would arrive. :)

    Prayers from MN!

  129. This is exactly what I've been going through!! For the last 3 weeks, I have woken up to MASSIVE amounts of bleeding, sometimes even soaking my clothes. And the bed. And everything. It is absolutely THE most terrifying thing I have ever experienced during a pregnancy (and this is my third in 3 years).

    I'll be praying for you!
